Learning in Action
Literacy:
This fortnight students have completed their persuasive literacy unit. During Reading, students analysed different advertisements to identify the word choice and imagery used in the ads to persuade the reader. They considered how text and images can spark thoughts and feelings in a reader. In Writing, students planned, drafted and published a persuasive piece about a place in Australia and why it should be visited. Students have impressed us with their persuasive tools, by including modal verbs, powerful words and punctuation to support their arguments. They looked at photographs of their chosen place to copy and draw to go along with their writing.
Preview: Next term, students will engage in two literacy units; poetry and biographies. Beginning with our poetry unit, students will first look at the interesting vocabulary used in poems and how these enhance visualisation for the reader. Students will explore reading and writing free verse poems about creation stories. In our grammar writing lessons, students will focus on the use of subject and object pronouns within a sentence.
Maths:
This fortnight students have been applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction whilst playing and exploring different games. Using the strategies they have learnt to solve both addition and subtraction equations and using the connection between the two concepts, students have enjoyed playing these games with their peers. They have revised previously learnt concepts on data and used their experience on the Big Day Out excursion to create a graph on the class’s favourite animals at Werribee Zoo.
Preview: In Term 3, students will be learning multiplication and division and the strategies they can use to solve different problems. Students will learn about time and conduct an investigation/project using their knowledge. Students will learn about shape and symmetry and continue to develop their problem solving skills over the term.
Inquiry:
Excursion: What an action packed day we had, on our Big Day Out. It was an early start but all students and teachers were at school bright and early. Our bags were packed with extra food and our faces full of excitement. Our first stop was Werribee Zoo, where we were able to get up close to the cheetah, who was entertaining us while stalking the local birdlife. Lucky for the birds, they were quick to get away . When we stood silently we could hear the gorilla crunching on his celery. The hippos were playing hide and seek with us, submerging down into the murky water. We listened to stories about connection to Country, our sense of belonging and the importance of looking after our environment and animals. The highlight of the Zoo, however, was the safari bus out onto the open plains, where we got up close to the antelope, zebras, giraffes and rhinos.
Back on the bus, over the Westgate Bridge, through the city to our next stop, IMAX. We were taken on a 3D adventure (thanks to our special 3D glasses), above and under the sea to learn about conservation efforts to help sea creatures such as turtles and their environment like the coral.
It was only a short walk across to the museum where we explored the Gandel Gondwana Garden and learned about how the earth has changed and formed over time. We were amazed at the size and scale of the dinosaur skeletons and stepped back in time to see Melbourne of old. In between all our adventuring, learning and discovering, we were able to fit in eating our snacks and lunch. No doubt there were many tired students and teachers that night!
“My highlight was the IMAX documentary about The Great Barrier Reef because it was a story about a girl caring about wildlife.” Ella 3S
“Werribee Zoo was the best because of the safari and the lioness scratching on the glass” Spencer 3S
“I really enjoyed the workshop about connection to Country because we were able to smell a gum leaf and it smelled amazing. It was interesting to discover that each gum leaf had a slightly different smell.” Myla 3KA
“On the excursion at 7.45 I went to Werribee Zoo and went on a safari to see all types of animals. My favourite was the rhinos because it was funny to see them relax.” Ilya 3D
“I liked the movie because it was 3D and I learned lots of new things about the Great Barrier Reef. I learnt that coral is a living thing.” Mia 3D
“At IMAX it was so cool because it was like the screen was coming out.” Casey 3RH
“I really loved the zoo because I love animals. My favourite animal was the meerkat!” Ben 3RH
Preview: In Term 3, students will be learning about the oldest living culture; Australia's First Nations People. We will explore the importance of indigenous cultures, beliefs, language, technology and agricultural practices.
Wellbeing:
This fortnight students have been continuing to focus on their character strengths and those of their peers. Each day, after recess or lunch, students have been encouraged to add to their display, describing how they used that strength. We discussed ‘How can we remember to try to use our strengths?’ and ‘How can we encourage others to use their strengths?’
Preview: In Term 3 we will be exploring how everyone has different fears, responses and coping strategies. Students will also recognise the need to respect this diversity through games and activities.
Exciting times ahead in STEM!
We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.
Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.
Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. We are desperately in need of parents/friends to join our Construction Crew. If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com
Here are some other ways you can contribute:
Opportunities to help:
- Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
- If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
- If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, help us to make contact to obtain suitable engineering resources.
- If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminum Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
