Reflection of Term 2

What a successful term of learning students have had in Grade 2. We have seen such growth in our students. Throughout the Grade 2 classrooms, students have worked incredibly hard to achieve their learning goals, whilst displaying persistence and dedication.

Literacy

This term students looked at non-fiction texts and learnt how to summarise, answer literal questions, interpret information from images and the author's purpose. Students examined various persuasive texts and identified the target audience, purpose and opinions.

In writing, students continued to focus on expanding simple sentences using the sentence science cards and pronouns. Students planned, drafted, edited and published 2 persuasive pieces. We were convinced by the pieces they wrote on why students should finish school at lunch time and why the canteen should be open every day.

Preview- Next term we start our Poetry and Personal Narrative units.

Maths:

Students were dedicated to mastering their addition and subtraction goals this term. They used strategies that were familiar to them to solve a variety of number and worded problems. We saw students working collaboratively with others on the same goal to help each other. Students learnt about positional and directional language, area of shapes, volume and capacity.

Preview- Next term we start our multiplication, division and fraction units. Students will also learn about time, chance and 2D shapes.

Celebration Morning

What a morning it was celebrating the inquiry learning from this term. Throughout the term, students learnt about different cultures and where different countires are located on a world map. They learnt about the features of a map and designed their own map, remembering to differentiate between man-made, natural and maintained landmarks.

Thank you to those parents that came to celebrate the learning we have been doing in Grade 2!

Specialist Awards

A big congratulations to both 2A and 2F for receiving all 5 specialist awards. The students were rewarded on Friday with a movie of their choice!

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. We are desperately in need of parents/friends to join our Construction Crew. If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com

Here are some  ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.

Message from Dance Specialist

This term students from prep- grade 2 participated in the art of dance. They explored locomotor and non-locomotor movements, as well as concepts such as time, space, rhythm, coordination, feelings, and shape to communicate and express themselves.

Through structured exercise, improvisation, and collaborative choreography, students developed not only as dancers but also as confident individuals who learnt about the importance of teamwork. Through this process students faced challenges and successfully overcame them.

Over the past five weeks, students have been immersed in learning traditional dances from various countries, learning the meaning behind each cultural dance and the steps involved to create each beautiful story. This exposure enhanced students’ curiosity about cultures, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity. Irish chain dancing in Preps introduced elements of Irish culture through its lively and rhythmic movements, offering students a glimpse into traditional Irish dance forms and music. Grade 1 focused on Brazilian and Colombian movement, students delved into the vibrant rhythms and expressive styles of these cultures in which were embedded into their dance. Finally Grade 2 were introduced to the lively Greek ‘Zorba’ with its energetic steps and celebratory spirit.

Overall, this unit allowed students to not only develop dance skills but also nurture a broader worldview, encouraging students to embrace and respect different cultural expressions and traditions.
