Celebration morning

On Tuesday the 25th, we had Celebration Morning, and we loved welcoming our friends, families and Grade 6 Buddies into our classrooms to share our learning. Over the Term, students learned about Natural and Human-made places, and explored many places in our local community and known landmarks around Victoria. We went on an excursion to Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground and learned how to look after these places.

Preview for Learning

Wellbeing

Next term, students will be learning about positive coping strategies and reflect on their emotional responses. They will also discuss ways in which they can take responsibility for their actions and describe ways to express emotions which show awareness of the feelings and needs of others. We will also learn about gender and identity and develop an appreciation of difference.

Literacy

Next term, students will be studying poetry. We will be reading and writing poems based on our inquiry unit of History. Students will start by looking at diamante poems, focusing on adjectives, verbs and nouns. Students will also continue their decoding skills by practising their reading goals and learning new sounds.

Maths

As the end of term concludes and we have finished celebrating all our wonderful achievements we have made in Math’s, we look forward to now exploring new mathematical concepts. The first concept we are going to explore is Multiplication. Understanding that a group is a collection of objects and equal groups have the same amount of objects in them. We will also be practicing our skip counting by 5’s to begin with.

Our applied unit is Time – learning to read the time on analogue clocks. This is a great concept to start practising at home. For example, the time before bed, the time of a sports/extra curricula activity or event. The exploration into analogue clocks will include understanding the minute and hour hands, and their positioning in relation to o’clock and half past.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic for next term is History. We will be taking students on a tour through the ages; learning all about different civilizations in time including Early Indigenous Australians,  Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, Medieval times and more! Each week, students will explore what families looked like, how people communicated and how people learned. We look forward to hearing the connections students make as they consider how their lives are similar and different to those in the past.

Message from STEM:

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. We are desperately in need of parents/friends to join our Construction Crew. If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program. Please email sophiechamberlain@lysterfieldps.com or melissaadams@lysterfieldps.com

Here are some other ways you can contribute:

Message from Dance Specialist

This term students from prep- grade 2 participated in the art of dance. They explored locomotor and non-locomotor movements, as well as concepts such as time, space, rhythm, coordination, feelings, and shape to communicate and express themselves.

Through structured exercise, improvisation, and collaborative choreography, students developed not only as dancers but also as confident individuals who learnt about the importance of teamwork. Through this process students faced challenges and successfully overcame them.

Over the past five weeks, students have been immersed in learning traditional dances from various countries, learning the meaning behind each cultural dance and the steps involved to create each beautiful story. This exposure enhanced students’ curiosity about cultures, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity. Irish chain dancing in Preps introduced elements of Irish culture through its lively and rhythmic movements, offering students a glimpse into traditional Irish dance forms and music. Grade 1 focused on Brazilian and Colombian movement, students delved into the vibrant rhythms and expressive styles of these cultures in which were embedded into their dance. Finally Grade 2 were introduced to the lively Greek ‘Zorba’ with its energetic steps and celebratory spirit.

Overall, this unit allowed students to not only develop dance skills but also nurture a broader worldview, encouraging students to embrace and respect different cultural expressions and traditions.
