Year 4 Spotlight

Concert Time!

Last Thursday night we finally got to perform in our very own circus! We’d practised for six weeks with Rich and Isaac from Circus Nexus. We got to design our own t-shirts to wear using fabric and sequins so we could shine on the night. A big thanks to Olivia, after all she is the one who put it all together. She helped us represent all the school values so we could shine as bright as we are on the night.

Persuasive Writing

This term students have been busy sharing their opinions when writing their very own persuasive text. They have been learning to add in persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, facts and statistics and a call to action to make their arguments stronger. Here are some examples. Can they convince you?

Could you imagine a world without sports? Kids would not know how to work as a team. Don’t you think every kid should play team sports so they can stay fit, healthy and strong? Did you know 47% of boys don’t play team sports and 46 % of girls don’t play team sports? If you don’t agree, read on and I will prove it to you.

~ Zach, 4B

Another point to consider is that gymnastics is fun. fabulous and fantastic. There are clubs all over Australia so wherever you are you can do gymnastics. Gymnastics will make you fitter. Gymnastics is a type of sport that includes physical muscles and flexibility. Why is a gymnast so fit? Because muscles grow in response to training. Gymnastics is very good for a number of reasons; it improves memory and even reduces depression! It also teaches you to overcome your fears, and it enhances fitness, now that’s good!

~ Cleo, 4B

In addition, if we make bullying illegal then people will have a higher confidence, be happier and be less worried. Because they are less worried, they will do better in school. Did you know that 19% of students have low confidence?

~  Mark, 4C

Our world is being devoured by rubbish, over 200 species of animals are being harmed and could soon be extinct because of this. As the very source of the litter, I should suspect that us humans must take a look away from our Instagram where there are no problems in the world and stop littering! Just imagine a world without pollution, global warming, or ignorance… OK, now stop. Doesn’t it look wonderful? Do you want to help our poor broken world? If your answer is yes then read this text that tells you all about microplastics, dying animals, and companies you can join / stuff you can do to help.

Inquiry – Geography

We have been learning about the States and Territories of Australia, such as Queensland, Victoria, Northern Territory, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory. We gathered some research about the landmarks, climate, indigenous languages, the capital city including the indigenous name of the capital city, and some fun facts. Then with the research, we made a poster and then presented it to our class. I think it was a wonderful experience exploring the wonder of Australia’s many different states and territories.

In Inquiry, we have been learning about Neighbouring Countries to Australia. We all got to research neighbouring countries like East Timor, Indonesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and the islands of New Caledonia. Then we made a poster or a PowerPoint to present our information to the class.

For Inquiry this term we also focused on Indigenous Land Management. There were lots of topics to choose from such as; cool burning, plants and foods for medicine, indigenous water management, seed cultivation and harvesting, and hunting and gathering.

Once we were in pairs or groups we were given one of the topics above, then every group was to research and create a PowerPoint. When most people were done we presented our topics to the class. Overall I think it was an amazing experience.

Maths

This term in Maths, the students have been learning how to use strategies to work out the answers to their times tables, and building their fluency and accuracy in multiplication. They have enjoyed working on non-routine maths tasks that have used problem solving and reasoning. They also learnt about perimeter, area, and statistics. Here are some reflections about Maths this term:

Multiplication

For multiplication, we have done the double strategy for 2 times tables and double, double for 4 times tables and double, double, double for 8 times tables. I have enjoyed doing the double, double, double strategy, because I like doubling my numbers multiple times for a challenge.

~ Paddy, 4C

Perimeter

For perimeter, we had to create a garden and trace around objects to find the perimeter. My favourite activity was creating a garden which had to have a perimeter of 100m, so I had to make a garden fence with a 100 cm perimeter. It was a lot of fun decorating the garden and finding new ways to do a 100 cm perimeter.

~ Leo, 4C

Statistics

For statistics, we did a graph of a question that we got to create. For example, I did, “Are you ‘team cat’ or ‘team dog’?” We then surveyed the class to find out what they’re answers were and then we put our data into a graph and made it look all pretty.
