It is always so exciting to receive the first copy of our annual ECP Literary Journal. It is a wonderful way to celebrate creativity and this year the journal was edited by Alžběta Viačková in Year 5. Enjoy reading an online copy here!

Iris Book Award
Each year, students from ECP take part in the Iris Book Award in which students from over 20 participating schools read books throughout the school year. In May we vote for our favourite books. All student votes are added up and the Award in each category goes to the book with the most votes. We also take part in The Iris Award Bookbowl - an accompanying quiz programme where students organise themselves in teams to ultimately compete with teams from other participating schools at the yearly IRIS Award Interschool Bookbowl Final. The winners of this year's Iris Award were I Must Betray You by Ruth Sepetys and All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir - both are fantastic reads. I Must Betray You plunges you into the heart of communist Romania, where a teenager grapples with the moral tightrope of being a forced informant. Tahir's novel explores the complexities of family, loss, and the American dream, set against the backdrop of a struggling Punjabi community in the American Southwest.
Každý rok se studenti z ECP účastní soutěže Iris Book Award, v rámci které se zástupci z více než 20 zúčastněných škol věnují po celý školní rok četbě knih. V květnu hlasujeme pro naše oblíbené knihy. Všechny studentské hlasy se sečtou a Cenu v každé kategorii získá kniha s největším počtem hlasů. Účastníme se také soutěže Iris Award Bookbowl, což je doprovodný kvízový program. Studenti se organizují do týmů a poté soutěží s týmy z ostatních zúčastněných škol v každoročním finále IRIS Award Interschool Bookbowl. Vítězné knihy letošní Iris ceny se staly I Must Betray You od Ruth Sepetys a All My Rage od Sabaa Tahir - obě jsou fantastické. I Must Betray You vás vrhne do srdce komunistického Rumunska, kde se teenager morálně zaplete do role nuceného informátora. Tahirův román zkoumá složitost rodiny, ztráty a amerického snu na pozadí bojující pandžábské komunity na americkém jihozápadě.
A Student’s Reflection on the Iris ECA/Reflexe studentky na klub Iris Book
The English College in Prague always offers students multiple possibilities and choices on what they would like to study and take part in as an extracurricular activity. Multiple students including myself chose to join an ECA hosted by our librarian Ms Selbie. This ECA is the Iris Book Award. Over the year participants in the ECA attempt to read as many books from the Iris Book Award selection as possible. We have a number of meetings throughout the year where we all sit down and talk about the books we have read so far and the books that we have yet to read. It is a very healthy and happy environment and, even though it may not seem so, we always have a lot of fun. After some time, in around March or April, the Iris Book Award organisation hosts a competition. This competition consists of multiple rounds, such as figuring out the book cover, solving word puzzles and multiple other activities which are then evaluated and graded. I personally enjoy these competitions quite a lot because not only do we get to spend an afternoon testing our knowledge on the books we read, we also get to enjoy ourselves and have fun in a friendly competition between different schools.
Not only is the competition fun, each year the organisation also specially picks out books that correspond to a set theme. This year there were 12 amazing books again in the Middle school bookbowl. I was most interested in the book The Lighthouse by Alex Bell. I feel like this book is very well written and structured. It has an interesting storyline and some good unexpected plot twists. Overall, this book is now one of my favourite recently read books and I am glad I joined the Iris Book Award ECA because otherwise I probably would not have discovered this book!
Anglické gymnázium vždy nabízí studentům mnoho příležitostí a možností, co studovat a čemu se věnovat v rámci mimoškolních aktivit. Několik studentů včetně mě se rozhodlo připojit se ke čtenářskému klubu, který pořádá naše knihovnice, paní Selbie. Kroužek se nazývá Iris Book Award. V průběhu roku se účastníci snaží přečíst co nejvíce knih z výběru Iris Book Award. Probíhají pravidelná setkání, kdy si všichni sedneme a popovídáme si o knihách, které jsme dosud přečetli, a o knihách, které jsme ještě nedočetli. Je to velmi zdravé a příjemné prostředí a i když se to možná nezdá, vždy si užijeme spoustu legrace. Po nějaké době, přibližně v březnu nebo dubnu, pořádá organizace Iris Book Award soutěž. Tato soutěž se skládá z několika kol, jako je vymýšlení obálky knihy, řešení slovních hádanek a mnoho dalších aktivit, které jsou následně hodnoceny. Mě osobně tyto soutěže docela baví, protože nejenže strávíme odpoledne testováním našich znalostí z přečtených knih, ale také si to užíváme a pobavíme se v přátelském zápolení mezi různými školami.
Soutěž je nejen zábavná, ale i poučná. Každý rok organizace také speciálně vybírá knihy, které odpovídají zadanému tématu. Letos bylo ve výběru 12 úžasných knih. Nejvíce mě zaujala kniha Maják od Alexe Bella. Připadá mi, že tato kniha je velmi dobře napsaná a strukturovaná. Má zajímavý děj a několik dobrých nečekaných dějových zvratů. Celkově je tato kniha nyní jednou z mých nejoblíbenějších nedávno přečtených knih a jsem ráda, že jsem se zapojila do soutěže Iris Book Award, protože jinak bych tuto knihu pravděpodobně neobjevila!

Literary Festival/Literární festival
This year, our annual Literary Festival was on the eve of World Book Day on 22 April - a fantastic day with students from Yrs 1-4 all rotating around different workshops and activities in Elektra. Each faculty offered a Literary-themed workshop for students in addition to those being offered by our guest speakers:
Rob Cameron (BBC correspondent for Czech Republic and Slovakia) led a fantastic workshop with a group of students culminating in the production of their own radio news bulletin. The feedback from one student said that this workshop was “absolutely amazing, and I learned a lot about how news bulletins are made and what the job of a journalist includes.”
Andrew Pratt (author of the very successful Honza detective series) discussed his journey to becoming a crime writer and gave the students tips about how to make progress in the publishing world. His talk was greatly enjoyed by the students - especially those who enjoy detective novels - “It was really fun and it was nice to meet the author of the Honza Detective book series!”
Honza Vedral (music columnist, editor-in-chief of Headliner magazine, author and musician) talked about his life in journalism and his biography of Roy Ellis - a really “cool” talk according to the students who attended.
Letos se náš každoroční Literární festival konal v předvečer Světového dne knihy 22. dubna. Byl to fantastický den, kdy se studenti 1. až 4. ročníku střídali na různých workshopech a aktivitách v budově Elektra. Každé oddělení nabídlo studentům workshopy s literární tematikou a další poskytli naši hosté:
Rob Cameron (korespondent BBC pro Českou republiku a Slovensko) vedl fantastický workshop se skupinou studentů, který vyvrcholil výrobou vlastního rozhlasového zpravodaje. Zpětná vazba od jednoho ze studentů byla následující: tento workshop byl „naprosto úžasný a naučil jsem se hodně o tom, jak se tvoří zpravodajské bulletiny a co zahrnuje práce novináře“.
Andrew Pratt (autor velmi úspěšné detektivní série Honza) diskutoval o své cestě ke krimi a dal studentům tipy, jak pokročit ve světě nakladatelství. Jeho povídání se studentům – zejména těm, kteří mají rádi detektivky – velmi líbilo: „Moc jsem si to užil a bylo příjemné poznat autora knižní série Honza Detektiv!“
Honza Vedral (hudební publicista, šéfredaktor časopisu Headliner, autor a hudebník) hovořil o svém životě v žurnalistice a biografii Roye Ellise – podle studentů, kteří se zúčastnili, to byla opravdu skvělá beseda.

The students were really enthusiastic about the range of workshops on offer and were full of hugely positive comments in their feedback: “It was so much fun and I would love to do it again!! Although I’m not great at dancing, my friends made it one of my favourite activities! This was a very welcome and pleasant experience.”
Studenti byli opravdu nadšení z nabídky workshopů a v rámci zpětné vazby zaslali mnoho velmi pozitivních komentářů: „Bylo to velice zábavné a ráda bych si to zopakovala! I když v tanci nevynikám, moji přátelé z něj udělali jednu z mých oblíbených činností! Byla to velmi vítaná a příjemná zkušenost.”

Celková zpětná vazba od studentů na celý festival byla mimořádně pozitivní a mohla by ji shrnout studentka, která se zeptala, zda by příští rok mohla tato akce být dvoudenní!
Librarian Picks/Knihovna vybírá
My recommendation for this month is a book by Lev Nikolajevič Tolstoj called Kreutzerova sonáta. It is a story about the tragic end of a marriage from a very patriarchal point of view and is morally oriented. Modern culture and music are condemned for supposedly awakening sinful passions. The Kreutzer sonata plays an important role in this tragic story between two people who deeply loved each other. It transports the reader into a very different world that was not so long ago.
Mým doporučením pro tento měsíc je kniha Lva Nikolajeviče Tolstoje s názvem Kreutzerova sonáta. Je to příběh o tragickém konci manželství z velmi patriarchálního hlediska a je morálně založený. Moderní kultura a hudba jsou odsuzovány za údajné probouzení hříšných vášní. Kreutzerova sonáta hraje důležitou roli v tomto tragickém příběhu dvou lidí, kteří se hluboce milovali. Přenese čtenáře do zcela odlišného světa, který existoval ne až tak dávno.

One of my favourite authors is Barbara Kingsolver and recently I have been going back to some of her earlier novels that I hadn’t ever read. She is an award-winning author known for stories that explore social justice themes. Her characters are often resilient people facing challenges, like the one I have just finished reading: The Bean Trees. It was her debut novel and is a road trip tale of self-discovery. Taylor, a young woman, flees Kentucky and lands in Oklahoma. An unexpected encounter with Turtle, a mute Cherokee girl, leads Taylor to become her guardian. The novel explores themes of resilience, family, and social justice. Kingsolver's characters are memorable, with Taylor's journey at the heart. While the book tackles difficult topics, it's ultimately uplifting. A captivating read that will stay with you. We have it in the library along with The Poisonwood Bible, a novel which delves into colonialism through the eyes of a missionary family, the Prices, who clash with the culture of the Belgian Congo in 1959. Told through the distinct voices of the four Price daughters, the novel explores themes of faith, cultural misunderstanding, and the fight for identity. It's a wonderful book that raises thought-provoking questions about cultural imposition and the complexities of good intentions.
Jednou z mých oblíbených autorek je Barbara Kingsolver a nedávno jsem se vrátila k některým z jejích dřívějších románů, které jsem nikdy nečetla. Je oceňovanou autorkou známou pro příběhy, které zkoumají témata sociální spravedlnosti. Její postavy jsou často odolní lidé, kteří čelí výzvám. Je tomu tak i v knize, kterou jsem právě dočetla: The Bean Trees. Byl to první román této autorky a je to cestovatelský příběh o sebeobjevování. Taylor, mladá žena, prchá z Kentucky a skončí v Oklahomě. Nečekané setkání s Turtle, němou Cherokee dívkou, přiměje Taylor stát se její opatrovnicí. Román zkoumá témata odolnosti, rodiny a sociální spravedlnosti. Postavy Kingsolverové jsou nezapomenutelné se zaměřením na Taylořinu cestu. I když se kniha zabývá obtížnými tématy, je celkově povznášející. Je to strhující čtení, které ve vás zakoření. Tuto knihu máme v knihovně, stejně jako The Poisonwood Bible, což je román z období kolonialismu očima misionářské rodiny, Priceových, která se střetává s kulturou belgického Konga v roce 1959. Getting lost in a good book can really make any daily commute pass in the blink of an eye. Whether you're stuck in traffic or crammed into a crowded train, diving into a captivating story transports you to another world, making the journey feel like an adventure rather than a chore. Before you know it, you're at your destination, wishing you had just a few more minutes to find out what happens next. I typically devour two or three books a month, though I rarely venture far from my favourite genre, epic fantasy. Brandon Sanderson is my favourite author in this genre as he excels at crafting immersive, intricate worlds that captivate my imagination. His books mostly fall into the epic and heroic fantasy genres, with a dash of young adult fantasy here and there. Picture epic fantasy as the heavyweight champion - huge books with complex plots and enough world-building to require its own postcode. Think "The Stormlight Archive," where you need a forklift to pick up the book but the adventure is worth the chiropractor visit. His ability to weave complex plots with deeply developed characters, who grow through their journeys, resonates with me. Sanderson's innovative magic systems, such as Allomancy in the Mistborn series, add a unique layer of intrigue and creativity that keeps me endlessly fascinated and eagerly turning pages. The school library, as it happens, has just acquired The Mistborn Trilogy. I wonder who might have suggested these to Ms Selbie?
Když se ztratíte v dobré knize, může vám každodenní dojíždění uběhnout mrknutím oka. Ať už uvíznete v zácpě nebo se mačkáte v přeplněném vlaku, ponoření se do strhujícího příběhu vás přenese do jiného světa, takže cesta vám připadá spíše jako dobrodružství než jako dřina. Než se nadějete, jste v cíli a přejete si, abyste měli ještě pár minut na to, abyste zjistili, co se v knize stane dál. Obvykle zhltnu dvě nebo tři knihy za měsíc, i když se málokdy odvážím vzdálit od svého oblíbeného žánru - epické fantasy. Short Story and Poetry Competitions/Literární soutěže
This year, Isabella Manney managed a first - she won not only our annual poetry competition, but also our annual Short Story Competition!! Both were on the theme of The Earth and you can read her entries below as well as the entries of the runners up - Liliana Tuček, Kristýna Havlová and Stella Sečková.
Letos se Isabelle Manney podařil rekord - vyhrála nejen naši každoroční soutěž poezie, ale i naši tradiční soutěž povídek!! Obě soutěže byly na téma Země a příspěvky Isabelly si můžete přečíst níže, stejně jako příspěvky studentů, kteří se umístili na dalších místech - Liliana Tuček, Kristýna Havlová a Stella Sečkové.

Where there is death, there lies life someplace near.

The Earth
I was the first thing you ever learned to love.Through all the uncertainties of life and cracks made deep in the core of this Earth, we were bound together. You turned to me when the adults around you were undependable.
When your delicate skin turned ragged after you first fell off your first tricycle, you begged to hold me while sobbing at the stinging traces of pain. My fur was a cushion to all the scars you endured. My beaded eyes were one of the few to ever watch you cry.
We chased pigeons instead of our freedom. You wished to soar like they do; to feel the wind beneath your wings with no boundaries of machinery. Purely living, despite all the air pushing through your lungs. When your nimble body was spent by the end of each day, you would read stories to me, clutching my soft stomach until my scent lulled you to sleep.
Life was easy; your world was filled with compassion. You had enough energy for both of us; it compensated for the fact I couldn’t move, even if I wanted to.
But I was not the only animal you cared for. You would protect even minuscule creatures roaming the forests we wandered. “Treasure and protect even things that seem irrelevant and helpless,” you told me, when nobody else listened, “After all, we are small to a colossal whale, but that doesn’t mean we should not be saved.” You picked up even the smallest cigarette, despite your parents scolding you for the ‘filth’ scuffed on your tiny hands.
My body stayed unchanged, and its fur grew matted and dull; you grew as complex as the branches you’d once climbed. But oh, these trees were withering now. You fought for children worldwide, to experience dirty soil instead of the plain walls of their rooms.
You spoke your mind to others often; you spoke for both of us. Growing older, you saw what the rest could not. “Grounds and waters are dying!” you bellowed, “We are exploiting things that struggle to grow!”
Despite all the alarms you sounded, not everyone seemed to hear you.
After years of distance, I was surprised to feel your heartache on my fur again, soaking in the despair and frustration those around you caused. “They aren’t trying, so why should I?” you snivel, seeking my familiar melancholy smell. “If those I respect won’t listen to what I have to tell, why should I say anything at all?”
My beaded eyes gaze back, twinkling with compassion.
“Your effort was never pointless,” I whisper. “When I watched your heart envelop everyone around you, your words stayed deep in my fur. You taught me every lesson I needed to hear.
After years of fighting for what is right, you deserve to hear my admiration.
Raise your fist about what is right. Never restrict your wisdom; you’ll gather people who hear your noise. They will spread it, and you shall save the world with your love.”

The Harmony of seasons
On the middle of a hill stands a tall, broad apple tree. Its roots gathering nutrients from the soil and earth below. The tree is a mother of miniature, fragile, white flowers that have started to bloom, dozens of them all bunched up together on a single strong branch. As the warm spring breeze blows, the vividly green leaves sway in harmony. Busy bees buzz by, caressing each individual petal.
On the middle of a hill stands a tall, broad apple tree. Its roots swarming with ant colonies who enthusiastically climb and make mazes in the earth below. The sun rays tickle the faces of thousands of red apples, making them glimmer in the bright summer daylight. The apples sit on thrones amongst their leaves, smiling at one another, wanting their perfect round shapes to be admired. The tree grins secretly, chuckling at its apples competing against each other, who will be the first to offer their sugary taste to the variety of birds who wander around. Suddenly, the tree shakes as the frisky wind puffs, and several fruits come rapidly flying down into the soft carpet of grass and moss.
On the middle of a hill stands a tall, broad apple tree. Its roots hiding under the earth and soil below. As the sun sets behind the tree, it creates a sea of colours identical to the red, orange and yellow shades occupying the tree in consonance. A feeling of isolation grasps the tree as more and more colourful leaves start to wave goodbye and leisurely glide in unison away from their mother and onto the hardened ground, which is already surrounded by crumpled leaves.
On the middle of a hill stands a tall, broad apple tree. Its roots relaxing under a thick blanket of white snow. The branches that were once confined with millions of leaves are now empty, only a skeleton left. The cold winter air makes the scrawny twigs shiver in crisp, shaking off the white coat they were buried in.The tree takes a deep breath in, gathering all its exhaustion and finally lets its eyes fall into a deep peaceful slumber.
As the snow slowly melts turning into rivers of clear liquid, the tree can already feel the spring air approaching. “Thank you” it whispers to the earth below, expressing gratitude for another harmonious cycle.

Time to say Goodbye…/Čas se rozloučit…
So this will be my last Book Talk for the ECP newsletter. In August, I shall be retiring and will have lots of time to read all the books that I’ve been meaning to! I’m also looking forward to staying in Prague for the next year or so and travelling around Europe to find as many of Havel’s Places as I can - apparently there are at least 52 and so far I’ve only managed to find three!
I’ve truly loved being here at ECP and I often tell family and friends that I have the dream job - wonderful students, great colleagues and more books than I could possibly hope to read! I wish you all well for the future - remember, as Havel (1990) said, “The salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart, in the human power to reflect, in human meekness and human responsibility.”
Toto je moje povídání o knihách pro školní newsletter. V srpnu odcházím do důchodu a budu mít spoustu času přečíst si všechny knihy, na které jsem se chystala! Také se těším na to, že zhruba rok ještě zůstanu v Praze a budu cestovat po Evropě, abych našla co nejvíce Havlových míst - zjevně je jich minimálně 52 a zatím se mi podařilo najít pouze tři!
Práci v ECP jsem si opravdu velmi užila a často říkám rodině a přátelům, že mám vysněnou práci – skvělé studenty, skvělé kolegy a více knih, než bych mohla doufat, že někdy přečtu! Přeji vám všem hodně štěstí do budoucna – pamatujte, co řekl Havel (1990): „Spása tohoto lidského světa není nikde jinde než v lidském srdci, v lidské schopnosti reflektovat, v lidské mírnosti a lidské odpovědnosti.“
