To get to where he is, has required an enormous amount of effort and sacrifice – well done Max and the best wishes from the students, staff and alumni of St Virgil’s College go with you as you approach this ‘Everest’ moment.
A great deal of Max's success can be related to another Old Virgilian – Paul Croswell SVC
Paul is Max’s long-time coach. Max moved to the Gold Coast in 2022, following his Hobart Aquatic Club coach Paul Crosswell to the Miami Swim Club.
His mother said her son’s decision to move to the Gold Coast aged 18 to pursue his swimming dream had been challenging for the family.
“That was really hard, I think if Paul Crosswell hadn’t left to go to Miami, he would have stayed in Tasmania. He really wanted to stay in Tasmania,” she said.
In August 2022, Paul Crosswell was one of three coaches to receive a Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) Coaching Centre Scholarships.
Paul’s profile on the Miami Swimming Club website reads thus:
Paul Crosswell joined the Miami coaching team in September 2022 and is an Advanced Licence Coach with close to 15 years experience in coaching athletes from junior to senior levels. Paul was the Head and High-Performance Coach at Hobart Aquatic for close to 10 years and was responsible for the progression and performance of over 200 swimmers. During this time, Paul placed several athletes on Australian Junior World and Pan Pac teams, as well as on Australia A teams and most recently the ‘Duel in the Pool’ team. Paul has had consistent success at National Age and Open levels, placing numerous athletes into finals and on to podiums. Paul has also been involved with numerous National Flippers Camps. Having managed a Learn to Swim Centre in addition to his coaching duties, Paul is well versed in developing athlete pathways right through from Learn to Swim to High Performance.
