Grade 1
Literacy
In Literacy, we have explored adding the suffix ‘y’ to make adjectives, as well as different sounds that make a long ‘e’ sound at the end of the words such as ‘_ey’ (key) and ‘_y’ (puppy). Each day, students completed a follow up activity based on the explicit teaching for the session, as well as consolidating their prior knowledge by participating in a range of activities such as banana bingo, word sorting and more.
This fortnight in Storybook, we have read the text ‘A Library Book for Bear’ and delved into the meaning of the words: dreadful, delightful and commanded. Students spent time summarising the story by identifying what happened in the beginning, middle and end. They loved getting creative and making a bear reading a book. Students then wrote sentences describing their bear. They also wrote a persuasive text encouraging the bear to read at the library.
Maths
In the past fortnight, students have been introduced to locating positions in two-dimensional representations of a familiar space by following directions and pathways. The Grade 1’s had to understand directional, positional and ordinal language to describe turns and changes in direction.
In addition to this, students also visited the properties of familiar 2D shapes, including their features such as the number of sides and corners as well as if they’re closed or open.
Integrated
This fortnight in Integrated Studies, students in year 1 have been focusing on being kind to one another. Students have done some work on ‘Bucket Fillers’, where they write kind letters to a member of their class throughout the fortnight. We have also been working on resolving conflicts during circle time.
Book Week
Book week was a blast! Students in year 1 were encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character and took part in the whole school parade in the school gymnasium. We are looking forward to Book Week again next year!
