Initia Lit – Reading
Over the past fortnight, students have learnt a new digraph /ch/ as in chick. They have also learnt three new single letter sounds - /v/ as in Vera Vulture, /ks/ represented by the letter ‘x’ as in Flexible Max, and /y/ as in Yawning Yak. We have also learnt some new tricky words - ‘put,’ ‘as’ and ‘do.’ These new sounds and words have been incorporated into both reading and writing exercises.
Our storybook sessions featured “Baby Business” by Jasmine Seymour. Students engaged with the text by identifying words such as 'protect,' 'connect,' and 'harm,' discussing their meanings and acting them out. They also demonstrated their understanding by retelling events from the story and making predictions.
In addition, we have been learning new strategies to tell the difference between some tricky letters, ‘g’ and ‘j’. We have also been counting syllables in words. Syllables are the beats in a word, and we have practised finding them by placing our hands under our chin, and feeling our chin go down on our hand when we say a word. We are getting so confident and cannot wait to show you these tricks.
Finally, we have continued tracing, copying and building sentences, and using sentence stems to come up with our own sentences. We have focused on including capital letters at the start of a sentence, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end.
Maths -
In maths over the past fortnight students have been learning about teen numbers. We learnt that teen numbers are ‘ten and some more.’ We practised recognising, counting, making, ordering and comparing teen numbers through lots of fun hands on activities and games. We played Teen Number Bingo, built a teen number city, made an echidna’s spikes using teen numbers. We also talked about the number that comes before and after, filled in missing numbers on a numberline and practised recognising the written number.
Integrated -
Over the last fortnight, we have continued our Geography unit on Special Places and how we care for them. Students discussed features specific to places like the beach, park, vet and bakery. They then read the book ‘Sheep on a Beach’’ by P. Crumble. Throughout the story, students discussed the features they saw at the beach, and the features in the story which you would not typically see at the beach. Students then made connections to the features they had personally seen at the beach. They have also shared with classmates about holidays they have been, and the features they saw on them.
In Respectful Relationships, students discussed who they can ask for help at school when they are feeling sad, scared, angry or feel sick, injured or have lost something. They also then shared with classmates who their other helpful people are in their lives and who they like to share good things with.
