Year 8 Girls Reign Supreme in the Inaugural AFL 9s Competition

The AFL 9s Herald Sun Shield Tournament held on Friday, September 6, 2024, saw 5 teams from Mordialloc College competing in their respective pools: The teams displayed commendable effort and competitiveness throughout the day. Here’s a breakdown of their performances.

Year 7 Boys

Round 1 - Mordialloc Red

Mordialloc Red 4.2.26 - Haileybury College 3.4.22. 

Mordialloc Red kicked off their campaign with a thrilling win against Haileybury College. The match was closely contested, but Mordialloc Red’s determination led them to a narrow victory. This strong start set the tone for their performance in Pool A.

Round 1 - Mordialloc Blue

Mordialloc Blue 7.1.43 - Bentleigh Secondary College 1.1.7

In Pool B, Mordialloc Blue dominated their first match against Bentleigh Secondary College. They showcased superior offensive play, defeating Bentleigh by a substantial margin, securing a 36-point win.

Round 2 - Mordialloc Red

Mordialloc Red 1.0.6 - Marymede Catholic College 3.2.20

In the second round, Mordialloc Red faced a tough contest against Marymede Catholic College. Despite their efforts, Mordialloc struggled to maintain their momentum, losing the match by 14 points.  

Round 2 - Mordialloc Blue

Mordialloc Blue 10.3.63 - Glen Waverley Secondary College 2.3.15

Mordialloc Blue continued their strong performance in the second round with another convincing victory, this time over Glen Waverley Secondary College. The team won by 48 points, maintaining their lead in Pool B.

Round 3 - Mordialloc Red

Mordialloc Red 3.0.18 - Patterson River Secondary College 10.3.63 

Mordialloc Red’s final game of the day was against Patterson River Secondary College. Despite a valiant effort, they were overpowered, marking a challenging end to their tournament run.

Round 3 - Mordialloc Blue

Mordialloc Blue 7.1.43 - Trinity Grammar 7.2.44.

In their last match, Mordialloc Blue faced their toughest challenge against Trinity Grammar. It was a nail-biting game that saw Trinity Grammar narrowly edging out Mordialloc Blue by just one point. 

Overall Performance

• Mordialloc Red had a mixed tournament, starting strong with a win but facing tough losses in subsequent rounds. They showed resilience and sportsmanship throughout their games.
• Mordialloc Blue had an impressive run, dominating their first two matches with substantial wins before narrowly missing out on victory in a close final round.

Both teams represented Mordialloc College with pride and showcased their potential in the AFL 9s format.

Year 7 Girls

Round 1 - Mordialloc College vs Patterson River Secondary College

Mordialloc College 0.0.0 - Patterson River Secondary College 6.2.38

Mordialloc College faced a challenging start to their campaign in Round 1 against Patterson River Secondary College. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to score, and Patterson River Secondary College secured a dominant win, with Patterson River winning by 38 points. With some girls having never played AFL before, this was their first opportunity to apply their skills. Despite the loss, the girls had a lot of fun in their first game. 

Round 2 - Mordialloc College vs Glen Waverley Secondary College

Mordialloc College 1.6.12 - Glen Waverley Secondary College 1.2.8.

Mordialloc College bounced back in Round 2 with a narrow victory over Glen Waverley Secondary College. In a closely contested match, Mordialloc College came out on top, winning by 4 points. 

Round 3 - Mordialloc College vs Marymede Catholic College

Mordialloc College 2.4.16 - Marymede Catholic College 21 3.3.21

In Round 3, Mordialloc College put up a strong fight but ultimately fell short against Marymede Catholic College. The game was closely contested, but Marymede clinched the win by just 5 points. To be this competitive in this round displayed tremendous growth from Round 1 and the players should be proud. 

Round 4 - Mordialloc College vs St Michael's Grammar School

Mordialloc College 3.2.20 - St Michael's Grammar School 5.1.31

Mordialloc College concluded their tournament with a spirited performance against St Michael's Grammar School. Despite a solid effort, Mordialloc couldn't quite overcome their opponents, losing by 11 points. St Michaels went on to win the tournament, which highlights how impressive this performance was for our Year 7 team. 

Overall Performance

Mordialloc College's Year 7 Girls team showed resilience and determination throughout the tournament. While they faced tough competition, their victory in Round 2 and their close matchups in later rounds highlighted their growth and potential. The team can be proud of their efforts in a highly competitive AFL 9s tournament.

Year 8 Boys

Round 1 - Mordialloc College vs Trinity Grammar

Mordialloc College 4.2.26 - Trinity Grammar 6.4.40

Mordialloc College started the tournament with a tough match against Trinity Grammar. Despite their best efforts, Mordialloc College fell short, losing by 14 points. 

Round 2 - Mordialloc College vs Haileybury College

Mordialloc College 0.6.6 - Haileybury College 5.1.31

In Round 2, Mordialloc College faced Haileybury College. The game was dominated by Haileybury, who held Mordialloc to just 6 points. Mordialloc College struggled to score, ultimately losing the match by 25 points. With the same number of scoring shots, accuracy in front of goal was the difference on the day.  

Round 3 - Mordialloc College vs Patterson River Secondary College

Mordialloc College 6.3.39 - Patterson River Secondary College 6.3.39.

Mordialloc College showed great resilience in their final match of the day against Patterson River Secondary College. In a thrilling contest, both teams were evenly matched, and the game ended in a draw. 

Overall Performance

Mordialloc College’s Year 8 Boys team displayed perseverance throughout the tournament. Although they faced defeats in the first two rounds, their draw in the final round highlighted their fighting spirit. The team’s effort and determination were evident, setting the stage for further development in future competitions.

Round 1 - Mordialloc College vs Haileybury College

Mordialloc College 4.6.30 - Haileybury College 0.0.0.

Mordialloc College started the tournament with a commanding performance against Haileybury College. The team dominated from the beginning, securing a 30-point victory. 

Round 2 - Mordialloc College vs Glen Waverley Secondary College

Mordialloc College 2.4.16 - Glen Waverley Secondary College 0.1.1

In Round 2, Mordialloc College continued their winning streak, defeating Glen Waverley Secondary College by 15 points. 

Round 3 - Mordialloc College vs Marymede Catholic College

Mordialloc College 4.1.25 - Marymede Catholic College 3.2.20

Mordialloc faced a tougher challenge in Round 3, going up against Marymede Catholic College. In a close-fought battle, Mordialloc managed to secure a 5-point victory, 

Round 4 - Mordialloc College vs Bentleigh Secondary College

Mordialloc College 8.1.49 - Bentleigh Secondary College 1.2.8

Mordialloc College continued their dominant form in Round 4, crushing Bentleigh Secondary College by 41 points. With Remi Sneddon kicking 7, it was all one-way traffic in this game.  

Grand Final - Mordialloc College vs Marymede Catholic College

Mordialloc College’s success in the pool stages earned them a spot in the grand final, where they faced Marymede Catholic College once again. Both teams have shown great strength throughout the tournament. In another crushing fixture, with Ally Worner kicking 9 goals, Marymede were no match in this game.

Overall Performance

Mordialloc College’s Year 8 Girls team demonstrated excellent form throughout the tournament, winning all their matches in the pool stages with strong performances on both offence and defence. Their victories reflect the hard work and determination of the team resulting in them winning the 2024 AFL 9s Herald Sun Shield.
