Y9 & 10 Community Connections

Year 9 Beyond - Community Placement Reflections

In my Community Connections placement, I was at Beaumaris Good Start Early Learning. I was involved in playing with the kids and helping with small activities they had planned. In order to participate in these activities, I displayed teamwork with my peers to come up with new games to keep the kids entertained. The kids and I were very creative when drawing and playing games, coming up with all sorts of things. The placement was a very bittersweet experience for me, as I saw some of my old teachers and the class pet turtle I helped name. It brought back some of my first ever memories. A meaningful interaction for me was when, as I was trying to leave every week, a few kids would hold onto my legs and not want me to leave; some even cried. I am so grateful to Good Start and BSC for allowing us to have this opportunity and to grow our connections. I would love to go back sometime and do another placement there!

During my Community Connections placement at Beaumaris Primary School, I assisted the teachers with various classroom needs. This varied from making decorations, helping kids complete their work and socialising with a range of people. By completing these tasks, I built stronger communication skills and got the chance to experience a new career path.

My most memorial experience was when I was helping my class label different animals. One of the girls dropped a pot of pencils, which made her very upset. She quickly went to pick them up and her friends came over to assist. One of her helpers was labelling a walrus and, in an attempt to cheer her up, put two pencils in his mouth and pretended to be a walrus. The small group all started to join in and in no time, she started laughing and no longer cared about her mistake. This showed me how children are so caring and always find a way to support each other. It's for that reason I think we can all learn something from them.

Community Concert

We have set up a wonderful relationship with Fairway Aged Care, where our students will perform a series of music concerts for the residents throughout the rest of the school year. Each concert will feature a 30-minute set from 1:30pm to 2:00pm. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to build performance confidence while giving back to the community. Last week, Year 10 students Will B and Judah S delighted the audience with their music, as shown in the picture below.

Year 9 Shark Tank

Last Wednesday, our Year 9 students led exciting Shark Tank activities designed to help Year 7s build connections and settle into their new school. The initiative was a great success, with creative ideas and engaging activities that made the Year 7s feel more at home. Well done to all involved in fostering such a positive and welcoming environment!
