What is your role at Beaumaris?

I teach Year 12 English, Year 11 English and Year 8 Communicate and Relate. I also have a Year 10 GOAL group and oversee the EAL students at the school.

How long have you worked at Beaumaris?

Since the start of 2023.

Why did you choose to go into teaching?

Both of my parents were teachers, so I sort of knew what I was getting into. My dad was an English teacher, and my Mum was an English and Humanities teacher but ended up teaching at a special school. I’ve always liked English and felt like I had something to offer.

Tell us about your family.

I'm married and have two teenage boys. My wife's name is Kris and my kids' names are Archie and Caleb.

Do you follow sport/AFL?

Yes, I'm a St Kilda supporter.

What music do you listen to?

I listen to a lot of music, I guess mostly Triple J-ish, a little bit of lots of things!

What’s Your Favourite movie?

Pulp Fiction, partly because it came out when I was in Year 12 in 1994.

Who would you like to swap places with for a day?

Anthony Albanese.

Who inspires you?

My wife.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve been working on this year?

The project is ongoing. - it started last year but continues - and it’s my lawn.

What was the last book you read?

The Sky So Heavy, which is the Year 8 text for this term.

What is your ideal way to unwind and relax?

Gardening and listening to music.

What was your favourite subject at school?

Probably English.

If you were a superhero, what powers would you have?

The ability to sleep underwater because we own turtles, and they sleep underwater.

What are your turtles' names?

Jeremy and Cruiser.

What skill would you like to master?

I’ve always wanted to be able to do a backflip - or even a front flip, a full somersault. Other than that, maybe kitesurfing.

Do you play a musical instrument? If so, which one?

Yes…I'll leave it at that.

What would you sing at karaoke night?

Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. I know that because I've done it before.

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

Jason Bateman.

Do you have a message for students you may teach in the coming years?

Just give it your best shot every day.

What do you love most about Beaumaris?

There’s a lot of positive energy here.

What has been a highlight of your time at BSC?

Getting to know the students. I've had a couple of GOAL groups, and seeing the Year 12s' commitment has been pretty amazing.

Thanks, Mr Hughes!
