Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 10, Term 3

In Week 10 we are learning about...

📚 ENGLISH

In Reading, we will be  examining the text, 'Feathers for Phoebe' by Rod Clement. This text provides us with a great example of how to respect ourselves for who we are. Students will also consider how the author has used vivid vocabulary to help with descriptions throughout the text.

In Writing, we will take example from the author Rod Clement and draft descriptions that focus on including vivid vocabulary. Students will write descriptions that create pictures in the readers minds, focussing on using strong verbs and adjectives to help.

In Phonics, we will continue our focus on saying and hearing sounds in words to assist us with spelling. In Grade 1, students will learn that the trigraph 'dge', spells /j/  and focus on CVV word patterns like 'old' and 'olt'. In Grade 2, students will continue to learn about the long vowel sounds, with a particular focus on oo and u.

What you can do at home

You might like to practise some of the phonics we are working on in the classroom this week. You can find optional tasks to do at home at the end of this week's edition of the Wonga Weekly.  These tasks will support our classroom focusses for the week.

🎲 NUMERACY

We will revisit the operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Students will play games and solve problems that encourage them to draw on strategies that have been presented and practised throughout the year. It is important to keep revising the things we have learnt over time to help students see where mathematical concepts connect.

What you can do at home:

Over the holidays make time to play some old fashioned board games and card games! There are so many mathematical concepts that are practised while playing board games. When we roll two dice, we think about two parts to make a whole, when we deal cards we count on, when we sort and order game pieces we share and group. Playing board games these holidays will help your child revise the foundational skills of mathematics.

*You will also be practising great social skills (how to be a good sport) while playing board games...sometimes you win, sometimes you lose-that is an important part of playing a game too!

🌄 CBL - Respect

This week students will complete our challenge, 'teach others about the importance of respecting yourself and others'. Students will continue building our 'Respect' mural. They will also take part in the recording of our 'Respect' video, sharing their understandings and experiences.

We are really excited to be putting the pieces of our mural together this week. Students have worked collaboratively to plan and design this project-it has been a huge process.

A special thanks goes out to the parents that have helped to craft the base for our mural. We are grateful for your time!

You will be able to view our outdoor mural, mounted under the covered walk-way of the Gr P-2 building, some time in Term 4. How exciting!

THINGS TO CONSIDER

We would like to remind you that our school adheres to the SunSmart policy set by the Victorian Government. All students are required to wear a broad-brimmed hat when outdoors from the 1st September, when UV levels are typically higher. Please ensure your child brings a hat to school every day to protect them from the sun's harmful rays. Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe and sun-smart.
