STCPSSA Year 6 Representative Netball

On Wednesday 11 September, the Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary School Sports Association (STCPSSA) held their annual Webb v Doran Year 6 representative sports afternoon at Dominic College.  Olivia Banks-Smith and Millie De Vries were very excited to be representing Mount Carmel College at this event.

Both students played in a Doran team, coached by Miss Olivia French, and displayed great sportsmanship and netball prowess. Prep Teacher, Miss Lisa Wheeldon, also kindly coached a Doran team.  The Doran teams included students from Corpus Christi, Immaculate Heart, John Paul II, St Aloysius, St James and St Mary’s.   Following the matches, teams were then able to enjoy a BBQ supplied by the Dominic College P&F.

Primary Athletics

The Primary Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 13 September, and perhaps the date was slightly unlucky, as the weather forecast caused the postponement of the Early Years classes involvement.  We pushed ahead with the carnival as planned for students from Year 3 – 6, and fortunately the weather cleared up enough not to dampen the spirits of everyone involved.  It was a fabulous, fun day, and we witnessed some very impressive individual performances from our students. It was wonderful to see all our students participating and getting involved, showing resilience and determination, whilst also encouraging their peers.

This year Loreto took the honours with 695 points, then Lourdes closely in 2nd with 655 points, and Carmel with 553 points.

Thank you to the HPE staff who helped organised the day, as well as the Year 9 HPE class and parent volunteer Josh Nally, who gave up their day to support this event.  Selected students will now compete in the JSSATIS and STCPSSA athletics carnival in early November.

State Representatives

Congratulations to the following students who are representing Tasmania at the National Championships this week.   We wish them well in their sporting endeavours.

  • Year 7 students Lavinia Ciccia and Charlie Seeber-Peetie are in Bundoora, Victoria, the home of the Matildas, competing in the U13 Girls National Youth Soccer Championships.
  • Freya Nally, also Year 7, is in Casey, Victoria competing in the U14 Basketball National Club Championships.
  • Amelia Sing, Year 9, is on the Gold Coast competing in the 15&U National Water Polo Championships.

Primary Basketball

Well done to all the students that have been competing in the JSSATIS Basketball competition. This season we were represented by 3 teams – Year 3/4, Year 5, and Year 6. All teams had a combination of new and experienced players, and it’s been fabulous to see the players growing in confidence as the roster progressed and combining well as a team.

Teams played their final matches last week.  A big thank you to parents and students who were able to coach and manage our teams, including parents Lisa Cranefield, Josh Nally and Markeesha Contor and students Antonette Conrades and Esther Dance. Thanks also to Stella Cranefield and Ashlan Ryan who referred some games.

Some basketballers are continuing on with preparations for the Primary Regional Basketball Tournaments on 26/27 October for Year 5/6 and 9/10 November for Year 3/4.

Secondary Hockey Premiers

In Term 3, the Division 3 Girls hockey team hit the field with high hopes. The team included some new Year 7s and many returning members from the last year; some with State Hockey experience, a solid number of players with Club experience and a few newcomers giving hockey a go for the first time. The team bonded together extremely well, and the potential started to become reality, as the wins gathered.

The team finished the roster with 4 wins and 2 draws and 0 losses, finishing in second place on the ladder, securing a place in the Grand Final against top side Fahan, who were also undefeated.

The Grand Final was a thriller, with Mount Carmel hitting the scoreboard first through a determined run from Willow O’Neill.  When Fahan scored the equaliser shortly after, the match hung in the balance until the second half.  A well-executed penalty corner, finishing with a rocket from Poppy Wilson put Mount Carmel back in front.   The match continued as a tight tussle until late in the match, when Poppy scored again in similar fashion.  Then on the siren, Eve Sylvester’s goal provided double celebration, with a 4-1 win and the Premiership awarded.

The season wasn’t without challenges, and the team should be congratulated for their ability to overcome adversity and show remarkable team spirit and resilience.  Thank you to Dr Heath Whiley who coached the team, as well as students who stepped in late to ensure the team had enough players to compete.

Congratulations to the team of Sophie Halliday, Willow O’Neill, Eve Sylvester, Eliza Fleming, Evie Gmelig, Poppy Wilson, Abbie Turner, Evie Ling, Erika Annett, Lola Helmers and Keshi Kesavanarayanan.
