JLC (Year 1 & 2) Newsletter-Week 8

Year 1:

This week, we have continued our exciting learning journey in Mathematics by focusing on place value and two-digit numbers, particularly ordering numbers. In Literacy, the children have been exploring syllables and practicing their reading, writing, and spelling skills with words that feature the patterns 'ee,' 'ea,' 'oa,' and 'ow,' as well as tackling some tricky words.

To support your child's progress, please encourage them to review the tricky words listed on the back of their Reading Journal each week. A fun way to reinforce their learning could be to have them practice spelling these words and writing them in sentences.

In Inquiry, the students have been developing their understanding of directions using vocabulary such as right, left, forwards, backwards, and turn. They had a fantastic time this week moving all around the pirate ship as part of a fun, interactive learning activity.

We are eagerly looking forward to spending time with the students after school tonight (Friday, 21st). They will participate in games with Skillzone and engage in various exciting activities with their teachers. Please remember to collect them at 6pm.

Stay tuned to our social media channels, where we hope to share plenty of photos of their adventures for you to enjoy!

Year 2:

We were super proud of the children’s performance at the school fete.  We hope you were too..  The students watched a video of their performance on Monday together; they were so delighted with their finale.

We have been super busy in Year 2 this week.  In Numeracy, we have been learning how to read the time on an analogue clock.  It would be of huge benefit for your child if you took the time to reinforce reading the time to o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past on an analogue clock.  We have noticed that lots of children are not familiar with reading analogue time instead many of them are more confident reading digital time.  Reading an analogue clock is a life skill for your child; please support your child to become more confident in this area.

Last week in Literacy, we read the storybook “Pete the Sheep” by Jackie French.  The students were entertained by what happened to the characters at the animal salon. During a writing session, the students were super clever with creatively writing about other animals that visited the animal salon too.

Thank you to all the parents who are taking the time to read with their children.  Please continue to record what your child is reading at home; both library books and the decodable readers can be used at home if your child is ready for this.

We do apologise for the change in sport and library days this week; school timetabling around NAPLAN were unavoidable.

Next Wednesday 26th March, Grade 2s will be attending weekday mass at the parish. You are more than welcome to join us. It will be a beautiful opportunity for the students to attend mass as a learning community and connect with Father Jun Jun and the parishioners.
