Remembering
Pope Francis: A Life of Love, Mercy, Justice, and Care for Creation (1936-2025)
On Easter Monday, 21 April 2025, Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, passed away at the age of 88. He was the first pope from Latin America and a member of the Jesuit order. Pope Francis was known for his humility, compassion,
and deep commitment to justice.
He believed that children and young people are the "joy and hope of the Church and the world." He often spoke about the importance of hope and encouraged everyone to trust in God's love, even during challenging times. This message of hope was so important to him that he made it the theme of the Jubilee Year.
Pope Francis was not afraid to speak about difficult issues. He addressed global problems like poverty and environmental destruction, emphasizing that caring for the poor and protecting the environment are moral responsibilities. In his 2015 letter, Laudato Si', he called on everyone to take action against climate change and to care for our common home, the Earth. He highlighted how environmental issues often affect the poorest communities the most, urging people to live more simply and sustainably.
Pope Francis lived a simple life, choosing to reside in a modest guesthouse rather than the traditional papal palace. He was known for his friendly and approachable manner, often reaching out to people from all walks of life. Whether it was embracing refugees, visiting the sick, or advocating for peace, he demonstrated what it means to live the Gospel.
His teachings on love, mercy, and justice have inspired many to work towards a better world. He reminded us that true friendship involves sharing both joy and pain, and that we should always strive to help others. As we remember Pope Francis, let's honour his legacy by showing love and kindness to others, standing up for justice, and caring for the environment.
We give thanks for his life and pray that he rests peacefully in heaven.
2025 Jubilee (Pilgrims of Hope)
What is the 2025 Jubilee?
The term “Jubilee” comes from the Hebrew term “yobel,” which means “ram’s horn.” In Jewish tradition, the sound of the horn marked the beginning of a particular year of remission and forgiveness. The Catholic Church adopted this tradition and made it a year of pilgrimage, prayer, and reconciliation.
What is the History of the Jubilee?
The first Jubilee of the Catholic Church was proclaimed by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Since then, the Church has celebrated a Jubilee every 25 years unless the Pope decides to call an extraordinary Jubilee, as Pope Francis did in 2015.
Why is 2025 a Holy Year for the Catholic Church?
The official Vatican website for the Holy Year 2025 — www.iubilaeum2025.va — says, “In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII called the first Jubilee, also known as a ‘Holy Year,’ since it is a time when God’s holiness transforms us.” The Jubilee is a time of forgiveness and reconciliation, with pilgrims worldwide flocking to Rome to celebrate the event. It is also a time of renewal and spiritual awakening, with the Pope and other religious leaders offering prayers, blessings, and ceremonies.
