During week 6, Year 3 were lucky enough to go on an excursion to the Wellington Caves. It was a very hot day in Wellington, but luckily it was nice and cool in the cave. Year 3 completed a range of activities including a tour of the Cathedral cave, discovery lab and fossil trail. In the discovery lab, students learnt about the different fossils that have been found and had the chance to dig for and identify different fossils in a small tray of dirt. During the Cathedral cave tour, students learnt about the structure of the cave including:

  • The Cathedral cave has one of the biggest stalagmites (Jimmy)
  • Part of the cave was used as an altar and they would celebrate mass in the cave (Nick)
  • There is a bible still remaining on the altar from the last mass (Tex)
  • The original caretaker of the caves left 12 graffiti marks throughout the cave (Arashi)
  • Within the cave there is a well, the cave was carved out by water coming up through the cave (Charlie)
