Year 8 Wellbeing Program - The Man Cave
Derek Glennie
Middle School Leader
Year 9 male students welcomed the The Man Cave team recently with student response to the first session very positive.
The Man Cave’s in-school programs are designed to spark change in how young men view themselves and their relationships with others, encouraging our young people to reflect on their own attitudes and behaviour, to challenge outdated gender norms, and to take ownership of their personal expression of masculinity.
The goal is to foster positive shifts in attitudes and behaviours that contribute to mental wellbeing and stronger connections with their friends, peers, extended family and wider community circle.
Students who participated in the program gave very encouraging feedback.
The boys were asked, "What is the best thing you learned from the session?"
... That you and your voice do/can have an impact and make a difference.
... How to hear what other people have to say and share, respecting that, and how to listen in to them.
... That there are other people in my year level that have similar experiences that I didn't know about.
... How to help someone who needs help.
Of the audience, 87% of the boys said that they would recommend The Man Cave program to other young men. When asked their reason, comments included:
... because it covers topics highly relevant to people my age, people who are very likely struggling and would benefit from this learning and experience. Its an important skill to learn - to open up when we need to and to allow our mates [to do the same].
... I feel like it [would be] beneficial for all men, because it teaches you things that might not always be taught.
