News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

In Cooking this week Grade P/1 made Mini Pizzas (including GF) with  toppings of tomato passata, mozzarella and parmesan cheese and oregano and basil and grilled zucchini and eggplant.

We also made a Tomato and Cucumber Salad with Honey Herb and Mustard Dressing.

From the garden we used, basil, chives, eggplant, zucchini, a variety of tomatoes and cucumbers.

We used the dried oregano we made last year. We also used the tomato passata the 4/5 Class made last week.

We first made the mini pizza bases. Each student kneaded a piece of pizza dough until it was soft and pliable.  They then rolled it into a smooth ball ( we discussed it was a 3D shape) and then they carefully flattened it with their palm into an even flat circle (a 2D shape).

Every one watched and listened carefully to the instructions.  They then used their hands and rolling pins to roll the dough circles into thin mini pizza bases.  Everyone had fun deciding which of the toppings they were going to have on their pizza, from the selection of toppings, including tomato passata, mozzarella and parmesan cheese and oregano and basil, and grilled zucchini and eggplant.

Kendre explained that we needed to make sure that we left an edge around the pizza base with no passata or toppings so the edge would puff up.  The pizzas looked amazing and everyone was excited for them to be cooked!

While the pizzas were cooking after recess, Marcus’s group set the table and went outside to collect flowers for the table.  They learnt lots of maths skills including, collecting odd number groups of flowers and setting out the correct number of plates and forks and cups for our group.

Chris’s group deseeded and cut up the cucumber and tomatoes and herbs for the salad. Kendre, Elio and Matilda did a great job measuring out the ingredients for the Honey Mustard dressing and had fun shaking the jar to mix the dressing well.

When everything was ready we all sat down to enjoy the mini pizzas and side salad.

Here is what the students thought of what they cooked.

Edie said, “I really liked the softness of the inside of my pizza with zucchini, tomato and oregano.

Luca liked everything he put on his pizza.

Elio said, “I really liked the dressing I made.”

Poppie said, “I really liked the texture and taste of the 2 cheese pizza I made.”

Kendre gave his pizza Infinity stars!

Well done P/1 and thanks Marcus, it was a great cooking session.

Photos and recipes for you to try at home, are attached.
