This week, the children have been exploring chopping, mixing, and smelling, engaging their senses while discovering the creative nature of the natural world. Through these hands-on activities, they enhance their fine motor skills and develop a deeper connection with textures, colours, and smells, which supports Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of well-being. As they experiment with different ingredients and combinations, they build creativity, problem-solving skills, and confidence, aligning with Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners. These sensory experiences also foster self-expression and help children feel proud of their accomplishments, supporting Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity.
This week, the children explored the life cycle of an elephant, learning about its three stages of development. They discovered that elephants are pregnant for 22 months and that they love watermelon. This activity sparked curiosity and provided a great opportunity for learning about animals and their unique characteristics, supporting Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners, as the children engaged in discovery and expanded their knowledge. Additionally, discussing the elephant’s life cycle and traits promoted language development and communication, aligning with Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators. Through this exploration, the children also developed a deeper understanding of the natural world, supporting Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world.
As we approach the final week of term here at the ELC, we are excited to reflect on the progress our children have made. It's clear that they have settled in well and have begun to build strong, reciprocal relationships with both their peers and educators. This week, we will continue to nurture these connections by providing experiences and activities that foster exploration and deepen their learning.
We are also thrilled to announce the opening of our new loose parts and building zone at the side of the ELC building. This new area offers endless opportunities for creative play and discovery, and we look forward to seeing the children explore and engage with it in the coming days.
