Year 4 News
Exciting News from Year 4!
We're thrilled to share some fantastic updates about our busy and exciting term! Our students have been working hard and achieving great things.
Firstly, we're proud to announce that many of our students have earned their pen licenses! This is a big milestone that shows how much their handwriting has improved. We've seen beautiful, neat writing all around the classroom, and it's wonderful to see our students taking pride in their work.
We were also very impressed with the way students showcased their work during their student-led conferences. It's terrific to see how confidently they can discuss their achievements and areas for growth and share their learning journeys.
Book Week was a huge hit! The school was filled with characters from beloved stories as students dressed up as their favourite book characters. We have also enjoyed a variety of picture books and activities as part of our Mentor Text writing sessions in class. It is a joy to see everyone's enthusiasm for reading.
Our House Athletics day was action-packed and full of team spirit. Students cheered each other on as they competed in various track and field events, and this was Year 4 students’ first opportunity to be part of this action-packed day. The sportsmanship displayed was excellent, and everyone had a great time being involved and supporting their house teams.
We're also excited to introduce 4A’s student teacher, Miss Freeman, who will be with us for the next few weeks.
Please enjoy our student contributions to the newsletter this week:
House Athletics Carnival
On the 22nd of August I was sitting on the bus next to my friend Aleia. It was the athletics carnival!!! It was my first time doing the athletics carnival and I was really nervous because I was doing the hurdles, and it was first up!! I put my bag at the Reserve house flag and walked down to where the hurdles were. As soon as I got there Mr. Farmer called out, "Year 4 girls line up," and so we did. "READY, SET, GO the sound went off and so did I. I sprinted and jumped over the hurdles until the finish line. I ended up coming fifth which I thought was pretty good.
After the next event, shotput which I skipped because I broke my finger was the 800m!!! I was excited and nervous so as I lined up in the 2nd lane my tummy was doing backflips. Suddenly we were off, I had a slow start, so I needed to catch up, in the last 100m I was coming fifth and was determined to come fourth, so I had a burst of energy. I ended up coming fourth, my first ribbon!!! After that was discus which I was determined to participate in but still didn’t place in the top four.
Then it was the 200m and we walked over to line up. I was in the 4th lane and was super excited. Beep! The sound went off and I sprinted for my life! I ended up winning that event and I enjoyed every second of it. We had a 20-minute break before doing the last couple events. The next events were the 100m, long jump, vortex and triple jump and I was really excited to do them. I ended up coming 1st in 100m, 2nd in the long jump, 2nd in triple jump and 3rd in vortex.

On the 22nd of August year 4-6 had the house athletics carnival. We had to arrive at 8:30am because the bus left at 8:50am. We all got on the bus dressed in our house colours, we went to Sandringham Little Athletics to do it. We got put into groups because there were a lot of people then we went to our first event (mine was shotput) it was really fun. We had to throw a heavy ball as far as we can. I surprisingly got 4th.
Our next event was the 800m. I was in group 2, so we went second. It was a hard run I came in second. Afterwards we did some more events, but I was mostly excited for the 100m sprint and triple jump which were the last two events. Once it was time for the 100m sprit. We got in our places a got ready. "Ready set go " and off we went I ran as fast as I could I managed to come second. Then we had triple jump the one I'm best at. I jumped as far as I could, and I came FIRST!!!! I got 7.37m. Overall, I got two 1st, three 2nd, one 3rd and one 4th.I loved it!!!!

On Thursday 22nd August we had our house athletic carnival at the Sandringham athletics Track. I personally was very excited. We had to be at school by 8:40 and on the bus by 8:50. By the time we got there most people already had butterflies. The under ten boys first event was discuss which was lots of FUN.
Next, we had a nice little break and cheer on our houses for small bits of time. Our next event was shot put I was not very good at it but still enjoyed trying. After that we had another quick break and got straight back into our activities. We had our 800m run. A few people struggled but our school has a lot of fast runners, and it was very contested.
We then had a big break because we were all very tired. 😊
The 100 m was the most popular because everybody was watching. The race I was in I came 1st!
At the end Wood Won, Reserve 2nd 3rd Mcdonald last was Morey. In conclusion I love the house athletics carnival.

On the 22 August we had our first school House Athletics carnival. It started at school with us doing the roll and getting ready for the bus. As soon as we hopped on the bus, we could all tell this was going to be really fun and exciting. It took about a fifteen-minute bus ride to get to the Sandringham athletics track but before you knew it, we were there. We put our gear with our house team mates and then we got into our randomised groups.
Our first activity was discus which is where you have to throw this small heavy Frisby and try to throw it as far as you can. We then headed back to our houses and took a quick break before the next activity. Our next activity was shotput which is where you have to throw this heavy ball as far as you can. And without a break we moved on to the next activity which was the 800m race which is 2 laps around the running track. We then had a break and a snack before the 200m race which is basically ½ of the track.
Then we started playing memory tag but it wasn’t an actual activity! Then we moved onto vortex which is where you have to throw a vortex as far as you can. We then did the 100m race which is ¼ of the track. We then did triple jump and then we slowly moved onto long jump. We all ended up doing really well and we had a safe bus ride back to school.

We started the day by getting to school at 8:30 am to start arguing over who would win. After 20 minutes we got called in to get ready and mark the roll. After a short bus ride everyone was nervous and excited. First was the hurdle final and for the year 4s Zac came first.
We were split into groups and did shotput third. Ethan won that from my group by quite a bit.
Fourth we did 800m. It was really hard because we hadn't had any type of food or drink. Flynn won that one.
Fifth we had vortex because apparently kids aren't allowed to throw a javelin. Jacob won that.
Sixth we had my favourite, the 200m. I came first safely.
Seventh we had triple jump which a lot of people couldn't do but I ended up winning.
We then had a huge break and then there was the 100m. It was insanely close but I won.
Finally we had the long jump. Oscar Chapman came first with a good funny technique.
And the winning house was Wood!!

On the 22nd of August we had our house athletics carnival. Everyone who was competing had to get to school at 8.30-8.40 so we could get ready for the bus that left at 9.00.
Everyone was overjoyed with excitement on the bus. Once we got there, we got into groups of our age groups. First it was the hurdles finals. Then we got back into our groups.
My group went to discus first where I came 4th, then we went to the ribbon table and got our ribbons. We went to shotput next, and I don't remember where I came. Then we had the longest track event we would have all day - the 800 metres - it was hard, but I came in at 4th.
We had a break and a snack then we had vortex throwing. I wasn't that good at that. Then was one I thought I was quite good at, the 200 metres and I came 3rd. It was a very fun race. We had about an hour break and we played with the vortex.
Next, we had the 100 metres. I came 4th again. After that we had triple jump where you go in a method of hop, step and jump and you need to get as far as you can. I came 5th unluckily. For our final event we had long jump where I forgot where I came. My house, Wood won the day overall and it was so fun.

On Thursday the 22nd of August, the year 4s had their first house athletic carnival and it was super fun. We all arrived in our house colours and went inside of our classrooms and did the roll.
We were all super excited but a little nervous too. When we arrived at the Sandringham athletics club, we got into our groups that we would be with for the rest of the day. We sat down and watched the hurdles final (we did hurdles at school because it would take too long to do at the athletics).
After we watched the hurdles, we got told what events we would do which were: Vortex instead of javelin, shotput, discus, 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m (we did this at school), triple jump, long jump, high jump (also did this at school).
It was a very close competition - the results were: Morey in 4th, McDonald in 3rd, Reserve in 2nd and Wood won. The house spirit award went to Reserve.
We were absolutely exhausted when we got back to school and enjoyed some relaxing medication.
Everyone did great – can’t wait for next year!

On the 22/8 was the house athletics carnival for year 4s to 6s to compete in the house carnival. The events were the hurdles, 800m, 100m ,200m, shotput, discus, long jump and triple jump.
All the buses left around 8.55 and we had to get onto the bus at 8.50. To get there on time for the finals in the hurdles. In school you do hurdles
To see the top eight to go into the hurdle's final at the track in the age group there are two groups and teachers in each group which have their times for each sport and breaks, and you can also get Ribbons for first second third and fourth.
At the end there was a relay with the sport teachers Beauy sec students and house students to compete in a relay for more house points. After the relay we announced the winning house which was wood then reserve then MacDonald and lastly it was Morey. Wood had to run a full lap or the track for a winner lap.
Then we came back at 2.45 and it was a really big day!

On Thursday the 22nd we hopped on the bus to go to the Athletic carnival. I was really nervous! When we got there, I wasn't that nervous then it began we were put in our groups then we went to our first event. It was Discus. Everyone did a really good job, the best throw was Finn, he launched it. Then it was shotput again everyone did super well the best throw was Flynn he makes it look easy, but it isn't. Then we did 800 m Flynn won again, and Ethan came second.
We had a rest break after that and a food break before triple jump, I didn't know where to jump from, so I had to ask I nearly came 4th except sadly I didn't. It was vortex somehow Jacob won he through it so far but not as far as Levi he launched it as far as I have ever seen.
I launched it except no one told me you could have a giant run up otherwise I would have won. Now it was time for 200 m I came 5th place I was really annoyed after that it was a break and then our 100 m. I came last because I was nervous, I had a bad start. Before long jump I had barely made it in top four.
Now we got to see the teacher's vs Beaumaris sec vs our school do a relay Mr Farmer said he wasn't as fast as he was last year except to win the relay he was as fast as flash then they announced the winners, and we went back to school.

On the 22nd of August, year 4,5 and 6s did an entire day of sports. My class went on bus 5, I sat next to Henry on the way there.
When we got there, we placed our bags in the correct house as I made my way to the year 4 hurdles final and won it for Mc Donald! There were 10 hurdles I had to jump over and missed 0.
Then we had more sports but ill only tell you the sports that I was successful in so here we go.
I came 1st in the hurdles as you already know, 1st in the 100 metres and 1st in 200 metres. Then I came 4th in discus, and 4th in vortex.
I could of came in the top 4 for long jump but I was too tired to run and jump triple jump I didn't go great in. Shotput, I did decent, and 800 metres I came 6th in my heat.
The day was really fun for me, and I wish I could do it every week!!

On Thursday I woke up early and put on my running clothes...
It was House Athletics Carnival
Once I was dressed, I ran downstairs to get breakfast and ran out the door.
I got to school early and chilled out with my friends until Mr Farmer called us in early for the roll!!!
When we had done the roll, we walked out the door and to the bus.
I sat next to Issy, and we talked about what we thought would be our best chances to get into districts, I thought my best chances were in discus and 800 metres!!!
When we got there, I had a drink and went to our age groups.
I was in a group with Issy, Harriet, Abby, Piper and some other girls.
My Favorite events where discus and 100 metres!

On Thursday 22nd of August, grades 4, 5 and 6 went to the athletics carnival at Sandringham athletics club. Everybody was told to wear their house colours and cheer their house as loud as they could.
When everybody arrived it, all started. Here are the activities: Shot put, long jump, running races, discus. Vortex and triple jump.
The house that won overall was Wood and 2nd was Reserve 5 points below Wood, followed by McDonald and then Morey. The House spirit award went to Reserve because they were cheering for their teammates as loud as they could.
Overall, everyone had so much fun and enjoyed the day, even though we were absolutely exhausted when we got back to school.

On the 22nd of August the year four, five and sixes had their House athletics carnival.
First, we all had to be at school by 8:40 because the buses were leaving at 8:50. Then our teachers took the roll and then we lined up and walked up to the front of the school. The bus was waiting for us so we hopped on with 5C.
When we arrived at the Sandringham Athletics track, we had to get into our houses to put our bags and belongings away. The teachers arranged groups for the activities for us.
My first activity was shotput - it was very hard but most of us made it through.
There were also running races like the 800m, the 200m and the 100m and loads more events.
We got the results of what house won. The house that won was Wood, the second house was Reserve, the third house was McDonald and then Morey. The house that got the spirit award was Reserve. It was very exhausting, but it was very fun.

How We Organise Ourselves
In Year 4 for How We Organise Ourselves, we have been writing about what we would do if we got stranded in the Amazon! So far, we have written 5 days out of 10 and it’s so fun. Sometimes we have choices, one bad and one good, they're the best but we also have other things like what we choose to do – and sometimes we have to make a labelled drawing of something e.g. Our shelter. Sometimes we get to slightly bend the rules of what we write about, but there is a high emphasis on slightly. My favourite day was day five (the one we are on) because we met 3 other classmates (in our adventure writing). I found my friends Sam, Logan and Jack. This was sooooo fun and I'm excited for day 6.
By Declan V – 4A
In grade 4 we have been writing about our class being stuck in the Amazon Rainforest with materials in a bag. We have written up the day five and mysterious things have happened to us storms and etc. I don’t know if I will end up being stuck or not!
I have a lot of had a lot of choices but mostly I got them correct from day 1 to day 5 I survived the storm and didn’t lose my backpack on day 4 I am lucky but one day 1 I decided to not eat the berries because I didn’t want to risk dying.
I would have gotten nausea if I had the red berries and if I ate the purple ones, well they were good. I slept next to a tree near me till day 2. And yeah, my favourite day was when me and my friends met up in the jungle and then made an SOS sign so we could get saved but it turns out we didn’t :(

Book Week
Last week it was book week. One of the school’s favorite weeks of the year. Mostly because you get to dress up as a character from a book that you like. It was really fun seeing everyone dressed up in their characters from a book.
I went as Diary of a Wimpy Kid and my friends went as Pow Pow Pig and my other friend went as a book (Space boy). We had a big parade and it was really fun. After the parade we told everybody back at the classroom what we dressed up as. Mrs. Badley dressed up as a tree and Bonnie dressed up as a fish. Funny right? 🤣 And that was a very fun day.
By Max R – 4A
On the 19th of August we had our 2024 Book Week day. It is such a fun day to see everyone dressed up in the parade. The only thing is it’s hard making a decision on what to dress up as.
I decided to go as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. And I thought I should ask my friends to go with me as one of the other characters like Alice, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, and of course Tweedle De and Tweedle Dum. In the end we nearly had all of my friends going as something. We had Aleia and Stevie going as Alice, Abby going as the rabbit, charlotte going as the Chesire cat, Betty going as the queen of hearts and me going as the mad hatter. We were all really excited for the day.
Finally, the day came we all looked amazing just like the characters. All of us lined up for the parade. The preps went first then the ones twos, threes, fours, fives and sixes all went. We all walked around in a circle high fiving all of the kids and seeing all of the amazing costumes and all of the hard work that’s gone into the costume.
All of the teachers dressed up as well this year. The prep teachers went as Thelma the Unicorn the ones went as a fart, the twos went as characters from Possum Magic, the threes went as a witch the fours went as a character from Fish in a Tree the fives went as sheep the sixes went as the dwarves from Snow White. It was such a great and exciting day.

Life With A Therapy Dog
Life with Bonnie is great. She loves every visitor or person she sees, she loves to play and loves cuddles. And always likes to play if you make a lot of sound. She will run around the room all excited. At the end of the day, she does not want us to leave and just for us to play with her and that’s life with our class dog Bonnie.
By Ned H – 4A
Bonnie is our therapy dog. Bonnie has black and white fur. She just got a haircut and a wash and blow dry, so her fur is quite short. She comes to our classroom twice a week. She likes licking us, likes lots of pats and sometimes steals our pencils. Sometimes we read to Bonnie and play games with her. On book week last week, Bonnie dressed up as fish from the book 'fish in a tree'. The costume was gold, black and red and my teacher Mrs. Badley made it. She has to wear a green therapy jacket that says 'therapy dog' which also has a picture of a dog on it.
By Rebecca – 4A
In my class we have a therapy dog - her name is Ziggy. She is so cute! Sometimes she does naughty things in playful ways.
For the athletics carnival I came third in the hundred metre race and in the two hundred metre as well.
By Kai – 4C
In 4C we have Ziggy in our class and it’s great!
She is a VERY good girl but sometimes she is cheeky (in a good way).
She’s very playful, caring, cute, joyful, funny - everything you could want from a dog. It is also very cute when she is under the tables giving kisses.
I also feel sympathy when the bell goes, and she gets sad because we are going home or outside.
Overall, she is the cutest dog ever and I love her.
By Jack – 4C
Hi, I'm Izzie and I'm going to be talking about Ziggy, Ms. Carter's dog.
Ziggy is a toy cavoodle with big brown eyes and loves to jump up and lick EVERYONE!!
4C LOVES Ziggy - she's cute, caring and loving.
Ziggy likes it when we do our testing because it's when she gets a break and dozes off to sleep and she HATES when the bell goes because she knows we're going to recess and leave her.
Without her little vest on Ziggy knows she is allowed to run around and go crazy!
But with her vest on she knows she needs to be calm.
At the start of the year, before we had Ziggy, we started talking about having a pet in the classroom, like a fish or a gecko but we decided it was too much money to buy food, a tank, decorations and the animal itself!
Then Mrs. DF asked Ms. Carter if she wanted to take her dog (Ziggy) to therapy dog training and Ms. Carter thought it was a great idea.
Ms. Carter started training Ziggy in term 2 and when Ziggy came in, we were all so very excited!
4a has a dog called Bonnie. Bonnie is older than Ziggy but likes to trot around everyone.
We all ADORE Ziggy, and she loves us too!
By Izzie – 4C
In 4C we have a therapy dog called Ziggy. It's Ms Carter’s dog and she is very CUTE!!! She is important to Ms Carter. A lot.
It's always funny when Ziggy sleeps while were doing tests and Ziggy is just lying on her bed. When we have fruit break we sometimes play with Ziggy. We take turns throwing the squeaky ball and when we throw the ball she runs to it and pounces on the it and tries to bring it back. I love also when she dances and is so happy!!!!!
My favorite thing about having a therapy dog is that you can pat her and play with her a lot.
My least thing about having a therapy dog is that sadly she can't come every day.
She is a bit cheeky because she steals rubbers that are tiny.
That is the life of having a therapy dog.
By Cormac - 4C
In our classroom there's something special. Ms. Carter went to train her dog Ziggy to be a therapy dog.
Ziggy does the funniest things like once it was Fun Friday, and some people were doing ‘Just Dance’ and then someone got a treat for Ziggy and made her dance. Ziggy loves to lick us. She loves to hang out with us when we are learning things. Sometimes she falls asleep at fruit break when Ms. Carter's reading to us but when we stand up, she jumps up too.
The first time Ziggy came we sat in a big circle, and she came to say hello. She is one of the cutest puppies ever.
Sometimes she barks at people outside but she's getting better at not barking. She also can fetch a small ball. She has some great chew toys.
Whenever we come to school and see Ziggy, we are all super happy. She can be a bit cheeky but she's just a puppy. I play with her all-Fun Friday. We all love Ziggy.
By Hugo – 4C
In 4C we have therapy dog called Ziggy. Ziggy is a toy cavoodle and she is very cute. Everyone loves to pat her. In the morning when everyone gets to school Ziggy is so happy to see us. Sometimes she goes crazy and barks but Ms Carter is trying to teach her not to react. We teach her some tricks like to fetch and dance! When she plays fetch sometimes she gets confused and walks away!
When it's fruit break she sniffs everyone's lunch box because she thinks she will get some food to eat. Sometimes Ms Carter has to hold her leash and tell her to go into her bed. Ziggy became a therapy dog in term 2 and since then we have had her in our classroom and sometimes it is just like she's a class pet. Ziggy is so fun to play with and it’s fun to teach her tricks. Sometimes when she is sleeping we try to stand up without waking her but it never really works.
She really loves being with us and when the bell goes for recess, lunch or home time she barks and whimpers. We have been practising leaving the door open and training her to stay inside. Most of all she really likes Mrs Badley, 4A's teacher. Every time she sees her she run or pulls on her leash and jumps on her! Ziggy is very cheeky and funny. Sometimes she just lies down on her back and wriggles around!
When we just met Ziggy as a therapy dog I thought she was a very well behaved dog and wasn't cheeky at all, but I was wrong. She is very playful. We all love having Ziggy as a therapy dog!
By Eva – 4C
In my classroom we have a therapy dog called Ziggy. Ziggy is so cute. Everyone loves her and pats her all the time. She is a toy cavoodle. When Ziggy comes to school in the morning, she is super excited and runs towards the kids in the playground getting lots of pats and cuddles.
During fruit break, she sniffs around our lunch boxes hoping to find some food. She knows how to play fetch but sometimes gets confused and can't find the toy ball and we all say "Ziggy come here." Ziggy became our therapy dog in term 2 and since then we have had her in our classroom but sometimes she is just like our class pet. This is because when she is wearing her special therapy jumper, she can't act like a pet but when it's not on she can act normal.
When she is asleep, we all try getting to our tables without waking her up but every single time she wakes up to see where we are going. Ziggy really likes Mrs. Badley from the other class and always runs up to her. She is cheeky as well as adorable. When Ziggy first came we all loved her and she ran around the class happily. Whenever she is good we give her treats so she keeps doing it.
Everyone loves her because she is friendly and funny!!!!!!!!!

Friday Fun!
On Friday afternoon all the year 4 kids get to have Fun Friday. We do ‘Just Dance’, colouring, drawing, board games and cards and if we are lucky in the next few weeks we might be able to LAPTOPS 'yay' for Math Playground.
Most of Year 4 love Bike Hero so we can’t wait to play that. And we can play with Zig - she is our therapy dog, but she does not do much work, so she hangs out with us. Sometimes we can throw a ball for her, and she does a funny little leap to get it. And when we do our How we Organise Ourselves Unit of Inquiry work, she takes a nap.

Mini Olympics
On Friday 16th of August, there was a Mini Olympics for the school. The entire school was split into different country groups, and we had to compete in a bunch of different events to win the title of Olympic champions! I was in India with some of my friends like Izzie and Zoe. We were determined to win that title.
We had fun on all the events, but some really stood out to team India. We really liked the gymnastics where you jumped up on a springboard, jumped on some bouncy turtles, walked on a beam, did a twirl and gave one of the year sixes (who were running it) a high five.
The hurdles were very tiring, but we pushed through and set the record of 9 laps. At the end of each event, some Olympic music would play, and we would move to our next event.
There were many other stand outs in the events, but I'll only say one more. The canoe was also amazing. You got a pool noodle and held it while you jumped on hula hoops and through the (pretend) river.
Then, at the end of the day, we figured out who had won it all. In third place was Australia. In second place was Greece and in first place was... Thailand!
I was a bit upset that we didn’t win, but I was happy for Thailand.
