Our Year 2 students recently embarked on an exciting educational adventure at the Melbourne Museum, perfectly tying in with our unit of inquiry on Sharing the Planet. The day was filled with fascinating discoveries and hands-on learning, beginning with a guided lesson led by the knowledgeable museum staff. The children had the opportunity to delve deep into the world of minibeasts, learning about a variety of creepy crawlies that play vital roles in our ecosystem.

The excitement continued as we explored the Bugs Alive! exhibition. The students were captivated by the wide array of insects, spiders, and other minibeasts, gaining a better understanding of their importance in the natural world. One of the highlights of the day was watching the 3D film Bugs: Mighty Micro Monsters, which provided an up-close look at the incredible lives of these tiny creatures, leaving the students in awe.

Before heading back to school, we took a peaceful stroll through the Forest Gallery, where students observed various species in a recreated natural habitat, further enriching their understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things.

Reading is Magic

This year's Book Week was a magical celebration of literature, bringing the theme Reading is Magic to life! Our Year 2 students and teachers transformed into an array of beloved book characters, adding a vibrant and imaginative touch to the school. The annual Book Week parade was a highlight, with everyone proudly showcasing their costumes and sharing stories about their favourite characters.

As part of the festivities, the Year 2 students participated in three engaging book week activity rotations. Each rotation focused on a different book, sparking creativity and deepening their appreciation for storytelling. The craft activities were inspired by the following books:

Raised by Moths: Students crafted their very own moths using various materials and added to a wonderful display centred around a ferris wheel.

The Concrete Garden: This activity had students creating their miniature garden scenes, fostering a connection between urban environments and nature. The students added their colourful minibeasts to a beautiful display of trees and flowers.

Tamarra: A Story of Termites on Gurindji Country: Inspired by this captivating story, students learned about termites and their cultural significance and then created their own termites full of colour to add to our indigenous Australian backdrop.
