Year 6 News

Year 6

Over the past few weeks, our students have been diving deep into their PYP unit, “Who We Are,” exploring how family culture and traditions shape who we are. This journey has taken an exciting turn as students have turned their kitchens into studios, showcasing their culinary skills through creative MasterChef-style videos.

These videos aren’t just about cooking—they’re a delightful blend of entertainment and tradition. Each student has selected a dish that holds special significance for their family, sharing stories that connect these recipes to their cultural heritage.

From heartfelt family recipes passed down through generations to modern twists on traditional favourites, the videos have been as diverse as they are delicious.

Our students have impressed us with their culinary prowess, enthusiasm, and humour. Whether it was a playful competition to see who could make the fluffiest pancakes or a step-by-step guide to creating a beloved family dessert, the creativity on display has been truly inspiring.

The laughter, the delicious-looking dishes, and the stories shared have not only made us hungry but have also deepened our appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures within our school community.

Different Cultures are Influenced by Many Factors

This month year 6 had a new unit of Inquiry introduced. This unit was under who we are, and the transdisciplinary theme was ‘Different cultures are influenced by many factors.

For the first part of this unit, we chose a country that had meaning to our family, eg; England. After that we researched the country thoroughly, before we got told we would make a dish for homework from our chosen country.

After a lengthy process, we finally presented on the Friday and Monday. Everyone did an amazing job and are very thankful for the effort parents put into helping their children.

My Mystery Country

This unit of inquiry “Who we are” were focusing on our family and culture, we chose a country that relates to us or someway or somewhere you went on a big holiday to or go to a lot.

Once we chose our country, we created questions individually we had about our country and researched about it. Once we got our answer, we put them into a PowerPoint. Once we finished making our Power-Points, we shared them with someone and from the information in our power point they had to try and guess our country.

There was so many different countries and cultures the year level got to learn about.

As part of our unit of inquiry, Who We Are, we’ve been looking at where we’re from and a traditional dish that comes from that place. We each picked a country that relates to us in some way. I chose the U.K since my grandad is from there.

The dish I chose that comes from the U.K is scones. We were told to film ourselves cooking it and show it to the class. We have also been doing deeper research into our dish and its origins. We are going to be putting all this information into a speech to present in front of the class to talk about what we’ve learnt and hopefully teach others.

Literacy - The Mysteries of Harris Burdick

In Year 6 we are learning and writing about these pictures from a guy called Harris Burdick.

Every week we get a new picture, and we brainstorm some of the objects in the pictures. A couple of weeks ago we did, “Under the rug.” We planned our story and then we write it in word and we all have different stories and it shows the story behind the picture. Harris Burdick really makes your imagination come to life with his unique pictures.

I think it’s one of Year 6’s best and most interesting writing tasks in our grade. For some of the pictures you really have to think about it and write about the pictures and list the detail.
