Year 5 News
It’s Been a Jam-Packed Month in Year 5!
Numeracy
This month, our Year 5 students have been tackling some challenging and exciting topics in Numeracy. We’ve been diving into:
Finding Unknown Values: Students have been sharpening their problem-solving skills by finding unknowns in mathematical equations.
Converting Between 12 and 24-Hour Time: Understanding and practicing the conversion between these two formats has been a key focus.
Addition and Subtraction of Fractions: Our budding mathematicians have been working on adding and subtracting fractions, mastering the concept with related and same denominators.
Division with a Decimal Remainder: Students have been exploring division problems that result in decimal remainders, learning to express these results accurately.
Literacy
Our literacy program has seen students engage in a variety of enriching activities:
Thesaurus Skills: Students have been enhancing their vocabulary by learning how to effectively use a thesaurus.
Handwriting Practice: We’ve been focusing on improving handwriting skills, ensuring that students can communicate clearly and legibly.
Writing Narratives Using Picture Prompts: Creativity has been the name of the game as students crafted engaging stories inspired by picture prompts.
Reading Comprehension: We’ve been developing our reading comprehension skills, focusing on retrieving directly stated information and making inferences.
Inquiry
We’ve recently wrapped up our Inquiry unit titled *How We Express Ourselves*. This unit was all about understanding the ways in which we communicate and how that shapes us. Here’s what we’ve been up to:
Influence of Communication: Students explored the various ways we are influenced by the communication we encounter daily.
Social Interactions: We delved into how social interactions shape our engagement with ideas and our responses to others.
Language of Opinion vs. Fact: We distinguished between the language of opinion and feeling and the language of factual reporting.
Communities and Influence: Students learned to identify the different communities they are a part of and how these communities shape their views and actions.
Impact of Influences: We explored what influences are and how they can change someone’s perspective and behaviour.
Culminating Task: The unit ended with a learning task where students explored the concepts of fact and opinion, and they even got to create a podcast. This was a fantastic way for them to share the trends they helped create, using their newfound understanding of influence and communication.
But That’s Not All…
100 Days of Prep: Our Year 5 students had the joy of celebrating 100 Days of Prep with their prep buddies. They made special crowns together, and our Grade 5 students formed a guard of honour as the preps triumphantly left for the day.
Mini Boss Incursion: Students participated in creating a podcast promoting a special trend they came up with. They got hands-on experience with writing and recording using Audacity, learning about the mechanics of podcast production.
Mini Olympics: Our students headed to Sandringham Athletic Club for a day of fun and competition, participating in various Olympic sports. It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm and determination to help their sports house succeed.
Music Experience with Beaumaris Secondary College: The music teacher from Beaumaris Secondary guided our students through a range of musical experiences. They got to try out different instruments and even enjoyed a rocking performance by the Beaumaris Secondary rock band.
Drama at BNPS: Our students put on an impressive production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It was wonderful to see them shine on stage, fully immersed in their roles. Encore! Encore!
It’s been an unforgettable month full of learning, creativity, and fun! We can’t wait to see what next month brings.
