Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

On Monday, our school community gathered for a special liturgy highlighting St Thomas the Apostle which celebrated our faith and unity. We were also excited to hold Kaboom Sports Day, which delivered a session full of fun and athletic competition for all students. Additionally, we honored St. Thomas the Apostle with various activities that highlighted his legacy and teachings. We came together in these events to strengthen our school spirit and shared values.

Students from all the grades who joined together to participate in the Liturgy and Kaboom sports.

We as a community also want to wish the students who will be going through Confirmation this weekend the best. May this special day bring you blessings, joy, and a deeper connection to your faith.

Religious Education: Students gathered to celebrate St. Thomas and learn about his adventurous life spreading the word of God worldwide. We discovered that he was a builder who planned and constructed many churches in Kerala, India, fostering supportive communities. Inspired by this, students created their own paper bricks, each illustrating their thoughts on the importance of building a community while honoring our school's namesake.

Mathematics: Students have completed angles and many have shown improvement in their knowledge as determined by post-tests. We have begun to work on fractions this week so that we have some background knowledge to complete some exciting math tasks related to the upcoming Olympics. In Week 3 and 4 students will learn, create and play their own Olympic type sport with parents on a special day in the upcoming weeks. Parents are encouraged to attended one session on any of the three days listed below.

Dates/Times for parents:

Day 1 - Friday 9th August - 11.45 - 12.30

Day 2 - Monday 12th August  11.45 - 12.30

Day 3 - Wednesday 14th August - 11.45 - 12.30

English: Students have started to read "Once" by Morris Gleitzman. It is a compelling novel that follows the journey of Felix, a young Jewish boy in Nazi-occupied Poland, as he searches for his parents. Through Felix's eyes, the story portrays the horrors of war while highlighting the resilience and hope of a child's spirit. This powerful narrative not only educates readers about historical events but also deeply touches their hearts.

Students have wholeheartedly  engaged in the discussions sections of the text, sharing their own ideas and listening attentively to others.

How can you support this at home?

Sharing what you know about World War 2 and the surrounding issues, is a great way to further engage with reading at home. Students often want to research or investigate this fascinating part of history.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): Students have discussed gender and the roles it has played. They identified that colours and roles have culturally and historically been designated by gender. They have begun to realize that this an arbitrary connection and has proved an interesting area for discussion.

Integrated Studies: The Footsteps Dance Program offers students the opportunity to develop their physical fitness, coordination, and self-expression through various dance styles. It encourages teamwork and boosts confidence as students learn and perform routines together. The Drama Program which started this week, focuses on enhancing students' creativity, communication skills, and emotional intelligence through acting exercises.. Participating in drama activities allows students to explore different perspectives, build empathy, and improve their public speaking and improvisation skills.

Auslan: Learning Auslan (Australian Sign Language) enables effective communication with the Deaf community, fostering inclusivity and mutual understanding. It enhances cognitive abilities, such as memory and spatial awareness, while also improving non-verbal communication skills. Additionally, proficiency in Auslan can open up career opportunities in education, healthcare, and social services, where there is a growing demand for sign language interpreters and support workers.
