Assistant Principal Message

From the Assistant Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to all those who have started the term with such dedication and enthusiasm. It has been wonderful to visit classrooms over the past few days and see students highly engaged in their learning. They are clearly enjoying the new units they have started this week, and the excitement is evident to all. As it is the start of the term we'd like to take ths opportunity to remind you of some expectations we have here at Our Lady Star of the Sea.

Playground and Classroom Behaviour Expectations

At Our Lady Star of the Sea, we are committed to fostering a respectful, responsible, and safe environment for all our students. Our Behaviour Management Policy is underpinned by the School-Wide Positive Behaviour for Learning (SWPBL) framework, which emphasises the dignity of each person and respect for everyone's rights.

Key Behaviour Expectations:

  1. Respect: Students are expected to treat each other, staff, and property with respect at all times.
  2. Responsibility: Students should take responsibility for their actions and contribute positively to our school community.
  3. Safety: Safety is paramount, and students must engage in behaviours that ensure the well-being of themselves and others.

These expectations are explicitly taught in classrooms and reinforced throughout the school. Positive behaviours are encouraged and rewarded to promote a supportive and productive school environment.

Playground and Classroom Behaviour:

  • Yellow Offences:
    • Lying
    • Inappropriate Language
    • Out of Bounds
    • Dress Code Violation
    • Cheating
    • Low-Level Defiance
    • Low-Level Disrespect
    • Breaking the Hands Off Expectation (Low Level)
  • Red Offences:
    • Bullying/Harassment
    • Vandalism
    • Off School Grounds
    • Aggressive Behaviour
    • High-Level Disrespect
    • Repeated Defiance
    • Breaking the Hands Off Expectation

Students who engage in yellow or red offences, on the playground they are sent to reflection. During this time, they work with a teacher to understand how they can change their behaviour and work towards a better future.

If your child comes home with a yellow or red offence, please use this opportunity to discuss the behaviour with them and support the school in addressing and improving it. Your involvement is crucial in helping your child learn from their actions and strive for better behaviour.

We believe that effective behaviour management stems from strong relationships and clear expectations. By focusing on the behaviour rather than the student, we aim to maintain each child's dignity and self-esteem while addressing any issues that arise.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a positive and nurturing environment for our students.
