LEARNING & TEACHING - Vira Pirrotta

Year 3 to 6 Life Education Visit

Life Ed is an educational service that empowers children to make safer and healthier choices. They achieve this through preventative health education. They believe that their programs are most effective when we engage the entire school community; students, teachers and parents.

Their programs are delivered by a team of specially trained educators and supported by tune-in lessons prior to the visit and a series of post-visit resources. Life Edu is an evidence-based program that believes in empowering children to make their own choices.

Life Edu will work with our teachers and school to deliver tailored face-to-face health and well-being education through a modular program about Cybersafety and building positive relationships with friends online and offline.

This module covers:

  • How to recognise, react and report unwanted contact, bullying or predatory behaviours.
  • Keeping personal information safe online.
  • Responsible and respectful behaviour when using communication technology.
  • Skills for building positive relationships with friends.
  • Exploring the role of bystanders.

Our Year 3 and 4 students will participate in a 90-minute session on Wednesday, August 28th, and Year 5 and 6 students will participate in a 90-minute session on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Life Ed also offers learning at home if you would like to access their complimentary parent/carer information session. This session increases your knowledge about current and relevant social issues your children face each day. It will also help you develop strategies to raise happy, healthy children.

LITERACY - Bernadette Parnis

What’s been happening?

Students have been very busy reading and writing a variety of texts for many and varied purposes. Teachers have also been very busy planning and preparing learning tasks. It has been my pleasure to observe what the students have been learning, how they have applied skills, and their responses to texts both in reading and writing.

Book Week 2024

It’s Book Week in two weeks, Week 6, commencing Saturday, 17 August – Friday, 23 August. Book Week is a time to celebrate favourite characters from classic stories through to contemporary books. Children usually engage in a range of fun activities throughout the weeks leading up to Book Week. The students will have the opportunity to enjoy these books over the next couple of weeks.

Last week I shared titles of the shortlisted books, many of which are featured on Story Box Library, simply by using the following login details:

Please make note of the following date: Friday, 23 August, at 9 am, as this will be our Book Week Dress Up Day with a parade at 9 am. Get working on your costume :-)

Book Fair

Our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during Week 6, from 20/08/2024 to 26/8/2024. Our Book Fair Family Event coincides with Book Week, and we would love to see you there!

You and your child will have the opportunity to explore a huge range of affordable books featuring characters and subjects kids love and want to read about. From newly released books and bestsellers to award-winning titles and perennial favourites.

This is also a great way for you to learn about and discuss your child's interests. Every book sold benefits our school, adding resources to our library and classrooms.

Scholastic Book Fairs help us show students the wonder of reading. After all, when kids choose their own books, they will be more excited to read and naturally read more! Stay tuned for information regarding an author visit.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or would like further information.

NUMERACY NEWS - Colleen Monaghan

This week we celebrated 100 days of Foundation.

What a great couple of days!

I came across this on social media and thought how good it was, so I am sharing it.

  • By counting 100 days, students get to see, day by day, how ten ones make a ten.
  • On the 100th day, they get to see how 10 tens make 100!
  • This gives a real-life context to learning about these foundations of our number system.

 But Also

  • 100 days of school is a big achievement for kids, that’s 100 times they have got up, gone to school, learnt about the world and worked their way through problems that arise!

It’s a great time to celebrate their achievements so far, and I look forward to the future!

We made cupcakes with the students and they did get to taste the mixture and of course eat the cake! Here are a few snaps of them making them. I will include the recipe as well.

Cupcakes

1 cup S.R. Flour

⅓ Cup of milk

2 tablespoons Butter/ margarine

3 tablespoons sugar

Dash of vanilla1

1 egg

Mix until light and fluffy and bake at 200 degrees fan-forced for 20 minutes

Ice and enjoy!

Year 5/6 designing Water Filters

The Year 5/6 students participated in an incursion with Engineers Without Borders Australia, exploring access to clean water and how this differs between countries. The students were encouraged to consider where our water comes from and were exposed to various water treatment technologies, from the complex to the very simple.

The incursion explored how simple engineering solutions can have a big impact on communities around the world. The students demonstrated their skill, teamwork, and resourcefulness in a hands-on activity: building a basic sand and gravel filter.

The activity is designed to engage the Year 5/6 students in a hands-on task while also exposing them to the inequalities that exist in real-world contexts.

The workshop exposed our students to skills used by professionals by challenging them to:

• Produce a creative solution to a difficult problem

• Make decisions by working as a team

• Plan their design and then build it within a restrictive budget

Here are photos of participating in the incursion.

Year 1/2 Designing Floating Homes

The Year 1/2 students participated in an incursion with Engineers Without Borders Australia and explored Appropriate Housing. They explored the importance of developing appropriate housing solutions in the context of floating villages in the Tonle Sap region of Cambodia. Strong emphasis was placed on the development of ideas and the goal of engineering and effective, low-cost solutions.

Year 1/2 students worked together in teams to build a “floating” house capable of holding large amounts of weight above the surface of water. Each team was assigned a budget, which they could use to purchase different materials to strengthen their design. The winning team will design a structure that can hold the greatest weight before submerging.

The incursion exposed students to skills used by professionals by challenging them to:

• Produce a creative solution to a difficult problem

• Make decisions by working as a team

• Plan their design and then build it within a restrictive budget

Here are photos of participating in the incursion.

Foundation & TaleBots

The Foundation students were introduced to a new form of technology called the ‘TaleBot’. The students discovered, explored and had fun with our new Robots and discovered what our new friends can do. Tale-Bot Pro is an educational robot that combines creative, active play and foundational coding concepts to inspire young learners.

Levelled up with innovative technology and a wide range of cross-curricular Interactive maps, our young students can learn basic coding concepts and manipulate a robot to develop stories smartly.

The colour of the coding indicators is the same as the command buttons to help students track the coding process and facilitate debugging.

Here is a short video showcasing the Foundation coding the TaleBots!
