Deborah District Athletics
Sixty students from Years 3–6 proudly represented our school on Monday at the Deborah District Athletics Carnival. The weather was ideal, and the standard of competition was exceptionally high. It was wonderful to see our students giving their best effort and competing with determination and sportsmanship throughout the day.
We achieved a number of outstanding individual results; however, it was our relay teams that were the highlight of the carnival. An impressive seven of our eight relay teams won their respective events. Congratulations to our 10, 11 and 12 Years Girls and Boys relay teams, who have all progressed to the next level of competition. Our 9 Years Boys team also won their event; however, students in this age group do not progress beyond the District level. Our 9 Years Girls team was narrowly defeated on the finish line and finished in second place. They should be extremely proud of their effort and performance.
All students are to be congratulated on their exceptional effort, behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the day.
As a result of their performances, a number of students have qualified to represent our school at the Sandhurst Division Athletics Carnival, which will be held on Monday 14 September (the final week of Term 3). Students will be notified of their selection once all qualifying information has been finalised and confirmed.
Division Soccer Championships
I would like to congratulate both our Senior Boys and Girls Soccer teams on their outstanding performances at the Sandhurst Division Soccer Championships, held in Epsom on Thursday 11 June. Both teams represented our school with pride, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, skill, determination and team spirit throughout the day.
The Girls team enjoyed a particularly successful tournament, finishing second overall. Their impressive record of three wins, one draw and only one loss came against the eventual champions, Holy Rosary. For many of our girls, this was their first experience playing competitive soccer, making their achievement even more remarkable. It was fantastic to see them develop in confidence and perform so strongly against quality opposition.
The Boys team also had an excellent day, competing strongly in every match and winning three of their five games. The standard of competition in the Boys division was exceptionally high, and our players should be commended for the effort, resilience and determination they displayed throughout the tournament.
It was a pleasure to accompany such a well-behaved, enthusiastic and team-oriented group of students. I would also like to sincerely thank Louise McColl for her outstanding work coaching the Girls team and Rylie Bell for her excellent leadership and support of the Boys team. Their dedication and commitment played a significant role in the success and enjoyment of the day.
Auslan News
Grade Preps have been learning new signs for Feelings: happy, sad, excited, tired, bored, sick, love, surprised, scared, angry, silly! Students have been learning how important it is to use facial expressions when communicating in Auslan and expressing feelings. The Preps have been practising signing these different feelings through songs and stories, including Milo Armadillo and In My Heart, and completing little craft activities based on the books to sign for their peers to interpret.
Grade 1-2s have been learning new signs for Household items and appliances, and have enjoyed designing houses to sign for their peers to interpret. They have also been playing Memory to practise Household signs including: House, Cupboard, Drawers, Door, Window, TV, Light/Lamp, Couch, Toilet, Clock, Kitchen, Table, Chair, Kettle, Deep Fryer, Blender, Sink, Tap, Fridge, Oven, Microwave, Rubbish Bin, Scales, Barbeque.
Grade 3-4s have been revising signs for sports, days, o’clock times, Numbers to 31, and ordinal number to practise signing simple sentences about sporting calendar events. The Grade 3-4s are enjoying this topic and have done a great job signing some sentences about their sporting events during the week for their peers to interpret.
Grade 5-6s have been learning revising signs in relation to School and Education: School, Principal, Teacher, Teach/Educate, Childcare (Signed as CC), Kinder (Signed as School + K), Primary School (P + School) Prep – Grade 6, and High School, Year 7 – 12, Term (fingerspelled), Class, Bell, Recess, Lunch, Wash Hands, Learn, Student, Study, and Subject.
We have pushed a bit harder in this topic by revising specific school subjects also:
Art, Dance, Drama, English, Health, History, Language, Maths, Number, Music, Reading, Science, Spelling, Sport, Technology, and Writing!! Lots of signs to be practising at home. 😊
The Grade 5-6’s have been writing and practising the Auslan signs for their own paragraphs about a typical/favourite School Day. Students have practised signing and then recorded themselves signing their short paragraph about School.
