Term Three is one of the most exciting times on the school library calendar because Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week is almost here! This year, Book Week will be celebrated from 22–28 August 2026, and our libraries are already preparing for a week filled with stories, creativity and imagination.

The 2026 Book Week theme, "Symphony of Stories," celebrates the magic that happens when stories come together. Just as an orchestra combines different instruments to create beautiful music, books bring together unique voices, characters and perspectives to create unforgettable reading experiences. Whether students are drawn to thrilling adventures, heartfelt contemporary fiction, fascinating non-fiction or fantastical worlds, every story contributes its own note to the symphony.

As always, we will be celebrating in style with Book Week activities, displays, special events, and opportunities for students to explore this year's CBCA shortlisted titles.

Looking for a read that connects with this year's musical theme? Here are a few recommendations from the library:

  • Grace Notesby Karen Comer

Verse novel set in Melbourne during COVID lockdown, where a talented violinist and a passionate street artist connect through their shared love of art and music, challenging family expectations and restrictions while navigating friendship, creativity and first love.

    Recommended for ages 13–17

  • Thunderhead by Sophie Beer

Follows a music-loving teenager with hearing loss as they navigate high school, changing friendships and personal challenges, using music, playlists and diary entries to find the courage to embrace who they are.

    Recommended for ages 10-14

  • Music Camp by Penny Tangey

Music Camp follows two talented young musicians from very different backgrounds who must overcome rivalry, friendship challenges and the threat of a looming flood as they compete for a solo performance at music camp.

    Recommended for ages 9-13

Of course, every great book has its own rhythm and melody, whether music is part of the story or not. The CBCA 2026 shortlisted books may provide further holiday reading inspiration. We encourage families to spend time reading together over the holidays, discussing favourite books and discovering new stories.

Don't forget that our digital library is available anytime, anywhere, making it easy to access great reads wherever you are.

We look forward to celebrating a wonderful Book Week with our school community and sharing the joy of reading together. Happy reading and let the Symphony of Stories begin!
