Prefects 2025-2026

The 2025-2026 Prefect Body first came together at camp on 21 August 2025, where three wet days in Collaroy challenged us to consider what it meant to serve a school as large, spirited and diverse as Epping Boys. Through team-building activities and the election of Riley P as School Captain, Joshua C as Vice Captain, and Ben C as Head Prefect, we began forming the direction of our tenure. On 29 August 2025, after our official induction, that direction became a responsibility.

Over the past year, the responsibility has been lived not only through major events and fundraisers, but through the quieter, often unrecognised work of school leadership. The Prefects assisted with multiple daily duties, including the canteen line management, bus line management, and toilet duty, as well as other moments that often happened behind the scenes. Earlier in our tenure, the Prefects also supported awareness initiatives such as Wear It Purple Day and Jersey Day, through assembly involvement and social media promotion to encourage students to reflect on inclusivity and organ donation, respectively. The R U OK? Day video, backed by “Lean on Me,” continued this focus on friendship and care, reminding students that leadership is not always loud. Sometimes, it is simply encouraging boys to check in with one another.

Term 4 brought one of our most memorable campaigns: Movember. Across the month, the Prefects altogether raised $4,900 for the Movember Foundation, using humour and school spirit to open conversations around men’s mental health, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Mancakes every Friday morning became a highlight, giving students a reason to come together before school. The Prefects hosted new events, including Mo or Mullet challenges, Mo Art Competition with the Capa Crew, and Moscars Awards, and on the final day alone, the mufti day, the sausage sizzle, and the SRC spiders collectively took in $3,155. Beyond the fundraising, Movember’s deeper purpose was carried through Take a MOment, where the Prefects interviewed staff from the Well to remind boys to check in with their mates and recognise that looking after one another is just as important as getting around the events.

The Prefects also marked White Ribbon Day by wearing white ribbons at assembly, creating video messages, and inviting students to take the White Ribbon pledge during recess on 24 and 25 November. With hundreds of boys signing in support of ending violence against women, the initiative reinforced that respect cannot remain a tokenistic gesture, but that it must be lived through the responsibility all boys have in challenging domestic violence and taking action against it. The Christmas Hamper Drive also carried this spirit of service into the end of the year, supporting Coast Shelter through the collection of non-perishable food and festive items for families and individuals experiencing hardship. Even smaller traditions, including the weekly Quote of the Week moments with teachers and weekly Friday Joke of the Week, helped create a shared rhythm across the year, allowing consistent moments of connection and engagement.

The largest achievement of our Prefect Body was the World’s Greatest Shave. Throughout March, what began as a goal of $50,000 became a final total of $53,005 for the Leukaemia Foundation as the Prefects transformed the campaign into a month of purpose. The Balloon Shave Competition introduced a new and memorable activity. The World’s Greatest Bake Sale, run in collaboration with Riverside Girls High School, raised $1,183. The World’s Greatest Burger saw queues stretch through the Year 7 area and all stock sold out. The Barber Showdown filled the school with excitement as students showcased their skills, while the raffle, mufti day, BBQ and final shave day helped bring the campaign to its peak. More than 100 students shaved, cut or coloured their hair, and the Great Shave assembly was made even more special with the attendance of Monica Tudehope, Jordan Lane and Trenton Brown. Above all, WGS showed what Epping Boys can achieve when the whole school gets around one cause.

Our final major event, Jane McGrath Day, became a fitting conclusion to the year. In the lead-up, the Prefects worked on promotional teasers, player cards, and a message video explaining why the day mattered. McGrath Day invited the school to wear pink in support of the McGrath Foundation, which provides specialist breast care nurses for people experiencing breast cancer and their families. The week was designed to balance fun with purpose, including an ice cream truck, a final BBQ, and the annual Teachers vs Students Cricket Match. With teachers and students given walkout songs and player cards, the event carried the same energy that defined so much of our tenure: school spirit used to bring attention to something bigger than ourselves. Looking back, our achievements are ultimately seen in the way the school came together again and again.

It has been an honour to serve Epping Boys High School, as this year reminded us that leadership is not about standing above the school; it is about standing within it, giving your time, setting the standard, and helping others get keen and get around it.
