Year 12 Chemistry Students Explore Spectroscopy at Macquarie University
Our Year 12 Chemistry students recently participated in a spectroscopy workshop at Macquarie University, where they gained valuable hands-on experience with a range of analytical techniques used by scientists in research and industry. Throughout the day, students rotated through practical sessions using sophisticated instrumentation, including UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry. These activities allowed students to see how the concepts they study in class are applied in real-world scientific investigations.
The excursion also included a Spectroscopy Analysis Workshop, where students interpreted spectroscopic data to identify unknown substances and solve authentic chemistry problems. The experience strengthened their understanding of key Year 12 Chemistry concepts while providing insight into university laboratories. We thank the staff and student mentors at Macquarie University for delivering the program.
