CAPA

Creative and Performing Arts
Term 2 has been an incredibly busy and rewarding term for CAPA, filled with assessments, reports, parent-teacher interviews, the highly successful Pirates of Penzance school musical, Eisteddfods, Senior Composition workshops, and preparations for a packed Term 3 calendar.
Congratulations to the Senior Percussion Ensemble on winning 1st Place at the Sydney Eisteddfod, outperforming a highly competitive field of selective, independent and public schools renowned for their outstanding ensemble programs.
We also congratulate Mr Taplin, who has once again been selected as a tutor for The Arts Unit State Drama Camp in Week 10. This prestigious appointment, for the second consecutive year, is a testament to his expertise and commitment to drama education.
Looking ahead, Term 3 promises to be just as exciting, with the Evening of Music in Week 6, the Annual Art Exhibition and Year 12 Showcase in Week 7, and the Community Concert in Week 10. While Drama Night will not be held this year due to the scale of the school musical, it will return bigger than ever in 2027.
We look forward to another fantastic term celebrating the creativity, talent and achievements of our CAPA students.
Music
Year 12 Music- A composition collaboration
On Wednesday 1 July, Cheltenham Girls and Epping Boys Year 12 Music students from Music 1, Music 2 and Extension Music joined forces in an HSC Composition Workshop. Students were given the opportunity to receive feedback from their peers and teachers before the submission of their final compositions for the looming HSC.
We were lucky enough to have guest Composer Ella Macens join us for a session of the Workshop. Ella is an Associate Lecturer in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney, and specialises in contemporary classical music. She was able to give our students really valuable expert advice and individualised feedback through a masterclass style session. It was a fantastic experience for all involved and we are very grateful for Ella’s time and expertise.
We enjoyed a wonderful day of music making and collaboration, and look forward to more opportunities to come!

Year 8 “Nature Meets Machine” drawings
Year 8 have either been working on a unit of work on ‘Nature meets Machine’ or ‘Colour and Imagination’. These units of work will swap over in Semester 2.
In the ‘Nature meets Machine’ unit of work students drew a machine animal creature inspired by the imagination of Nicholas Lampert and his machine animal collages and Leonardo da Vinci's drawings of inventions and mirror writing technique.

Year 9 Visual Arts "Celebrity Portraits"
Year 9 students have been studying formal drawing techniques using graphite pencils. They were introduced to fundamental skills in tonal modelling, developing their ability to create depth, form, and texture through layering and careful shading. Warm up exercises focused on building confidence with intricate details and observational drawing techniques. Students then extended these skills through a portraiture unit, exploring portrait conventions and creating detailed drawings of celebrities. This work encouraged students to refine their observational skills, accuracy, and understanding of proportion, tone, and facial features.

Photographic and Digital Media- Imagination Light!
Year 9PDM
This semester, the Year 9 Photographic and Digital Media class has completed their first practical assessment with their Portrait Portfolio submissions. There is a fantastic range of diverse skills on display in the class as can be seen with these student works. The class has experimented with studio lighting, composition, movement, and post-production techniques. It's been an exciting opportunity for the students to engage with the Adobe suite of programs including Photoshop and Lightroom. I'm looking forward to seeing what the class will produce in the following terms.

Eric Jiang- Visual Arts Class of 2025
Eric's artwork celebrates the beauty and complexity of architecture across cultures and time, presenting buildings as enduring expressions of human creativity, purpose and connection. Through layered depictions of architectural forms, he invites viewers to look beyond their functional role and consider the craftsmanship, history and lived experiences embedded within them. His work explores how architecture shapes identity, preserves culture and serves as a lasting vessel for human stories, encouraging reflection on the profound relationship between people and the built environment.
Eric's BOW comprised of 8 graphite and coloured pencil drawings.
Eric is currently studying a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of NSW.

MUSIC CO-CURRICULAR – Where Talent Takes the Stage!
Our Music Ensemble program continues with regular rehearsals and performances planned.
Sydney Eisteddfod
CONGRATULATIONS to all our Ensembles who recently performed at the Sydney Eisteddfod.
Senior Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Melissa Kenny won their section and went on to compete at the John Lamble Australasian Choral Championships in June.
Senior Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Lachlan Skinner won their section and Stage Band, under the direction of Mike Kenny performed admirably in their section.
An Evening of Music – Tuesday 25 August 2026
Save the Date for our annual showcase of music. This evening will feature all our ensembles, Year 12 soloists and our Year 7 choir, a tradition at our school where all Year 7 students perform for their parents and friends
A reminder about rehearsals: Our Music Program is a wonderful opportunity to have students involved in activities outside of their normal classes. These ensembles challenge students musically and provide a great community of like-minded musicians. However, these ensembles require the commitment of all students to attend all rehearsals and performances. This is especially important in the lead up to major performances such as The Evening of Music. Absences must be notified in writing to the Music Program- ebhs.music@det.nsw.edu.au
