Reformation and Remembrace

In the last two weeks, we have held two whole school chapels to mark two significant days. The first was for Reformation Day, and the second for Remembrance Day.

On the 31st of October each year, Lakeside College celebrates Reformation Day. This holds special significance for us as a Lutheran school, as we remember the moment in history when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517.

Luther reminded people that the Good News of Jesus isn’t about what we need to DO, but what Jesus has DONE for us. This ignited a spiritual and theological revolution. As we gathered together, to celebrate this world changing event, students were also asked to consider how they would like to see the world change. A representative from each class then nailed this declaration to our Reformation Day door.

It is a privilege to our young people grappling with the issues they see in the world today. We pray they might indeed be people who change the world, as they serve the world in love.

The 11th of November each year marks Remembrance Day - an international occasion dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who served during the First World War and subsequent conflicts. It is a day of reflection and gratitude for all military personnel who have served and continue to serve their countries. Our youngest students played a special role in this service, each colouring in a poppy, which were used to decorate our cross.

Term 4 - Term of Light

Our theme for our regular chapel services this term has been “light”. Students have been challenged by the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount -

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

This week, to conclude this series, students in our Upper Primary and Secondary chapel services have reflected on a song called “Do Something” by Matthew West. They were challenged to consider what they might do to be light into our world. These photos show some of their reflections.

God’s blessings to you and your family.
