Sports Report

Semester 2 Sport 2023

Inter-School Sport

Semester 2 saw many teams competing across all year levels in netball, hockey, table tennis, futsal and basketball. Well done to all the students who represented the school and a big thank you to the teachers who gave up their time to train and coach these teams.

A special mention must go the to the Year 7 Girls basketball team coached by Miss De Lange and Yr 10 student Claudia. They won the NPD title and competed again at the SMR Championships in Term 4. Well done to this great team!

Cross Country

It was a huge year for Yr 10 student Lochie. Through determination and dedication to his training, he has become an elite long-distance runner. This culminated in him qualifying for the state cross country team and led to him competing at the Australian Championships (Nationals) at

the end of August in Canberra. Well done and congratulations on a great year Lochie.

Athletics

2023 was one of the most successful years ever for Track and Field Athletics here at Patterson River Secondary College.

At the Southern Metro Region Championships, we took home bags of medals, with many students winning their events and qualifying for the State Championships. Here we had some incredible results which led to Patterson River Secondary College finishing 5th overall in the state! Some standout individual performances at the State Championships included:

Archer: Gold in the 100m, 200m, triple jump and high jump

Jack: Gold in the triple jump and long jump and 2nd in high jump

Shannon: Silver in the 1500m walk, 2nd in high jump and 3rd in triple jump

Charlee: Gold in the shot put, silver in the 100m and 3rd in 200m

Lucy: Gold in the javelin with PD of 31.95m

Shkyiah: Gold in the 400m

Lochie: Silver in the steeplechase

Audrey:  3rd in 400m

Shkyiah, Alanna, Hayley, Olivia – 2nd in 18-20 Girls Relay

Some of these students went on to compete again at the All-Schools Championships, where Archer, Jack, Lucy & Shkyiah were joined by Harli Lennon in winning medals here, including another gold to Archer in the 200m.

Finally, we had Lucy travel to Perth to represent Victoria at the National Championships, where she threw a personal best in the javelin to finish 5th place in the country!

Students performed well across the day with the slightly challenging weather. A huge thank you to Tracey Delaney for assisting on the day.

Year 7 Tchoukball Competition

The annual Year 7 Tchoukball Tournament was held again during Term 4. After another epic tournament we eventually saw 7A coached by Mr Walton come away with the championship trophy. Congratulations to Lucy on being named the McLoughlin Medallist for best on court in the grand final.

Year 8 Boys Hockey

After 4 weeks of training the Year 8 Boys Hockey Team headed to Monash Frankston for the sports group round robin.

Game 1 PRSC v Frankston HS 1-1 Draw

On paper, and on the pitch, the team looked strong. The goal keeping of Jack was elite and the support from backline of Harvey, Ashley, Jordy, Thomas keeping out penalty corners on numerous occasions.

The midfielders, Charlie, Gibson, Max, Jack, Connor gave plenty of opportunities for the forwards, especially Cooper. We had 3 penalty shots in a row as FHS defenders were “breaking” in defense but alas could not find the back of the net. In general play Gibson Willis found the goal and PRSC moved one goal up.

At half time Krish and Kabir came on to add some speed and fresh legs to the team and we were unlucky to not get another goal with Shahith providing some good opportunities out wide.   Unfortunately, FHS made the most of a penalty shot very late in the game and scored the equalizer.

Game 2 PRSC v EMC 0 – 0 Draw

EMC have their own synthetic hockey pitch and were very well coached and played with discipline. It was a top level contest with some great passages of play, scoring opportunities and another great game in goals by Jack Winter.

Jordy was thrown forward to try to pinch a late goal and got one on one with the goalie a couple of times but some great goal keeping for EMC denied the goals.

At the end the game was locked up 0-0 after 30 minutes of play.

Conclusion

The team were a pleasure to coach and could not fault the way they represented the College and played the game on the day. Two draws were not quite enough as EMC scored 2 goals against Frankston HS and left to us to ponder yet another “close but not close enough” tilt at the title.

Next year…….
