Grade 2

Only 1 more week to go!

Here’s what our grade 2’s have been up to the last fortnight.

Reading

For reading, students participated in a number of practice NAPLAN activities in early preparation for NAPLAN that will be held in term 1 2024. We began by reading a number of different text types and discussing the different structures, features and vocabulary as a class. We then progressed to reading a single text together as a class and breaking off to answer some comprehension questions independently, and finally students finished the week off by completing some practice reading NAPLAN tests from previous years independently under test conditions.

Writing

Last week in writing, students completed a practice NAPLAN writing piece every day. Each lesson students were given a prompt that alternated between a narrative genre and a persuasive genre. They were given 10 minutes of planning time to map out how they would structure their piece and then 35-45 minutes of writing time under test conditions. Over the week students were able to increase their stamina in their ability to write for a long period of time and complete their writing pieces in one sitting.

Maths

In maths last week, as a class we also worked through some previous NAPLAN tests. We looked at each question and discussed a number of different ways we could solve each problem. Students would practice answering these questions independently on a mini whiteboard or blank piece of paper or in small groups. The students then progressed to completing some practice NAPLAN tests independently under test conditions.

Funtopia

Last week we had our end of year celebration and went to Funtopia in Carrum Downs. The children had a FANTASTIC day and enjoyed every bit of it!. See our school facebook page for an album of photos.

Sushi Day

Last week we also had our very first whole school sushi lunch day. The children were very excited to get their lunch delivered to their classrooms and enjoy a nice treat.

Inquiry/Christmas

We have now finished our reading, writing and maths units for the term and have moved into exploring our inquiry topic for the students term 4 projects. This term we are looking at 4 celebrations; Diwali, Chinese New Year, Day of the Dead and ANZAC day. Students have partnered up and begun researching their chosen celebration and started to create a poster to show all the information they have discovered and made some beautiful crafts.

Next week we will also be getting into the Christmas spirit by completing some wonderful crafts the teachers have organised along with some other Christmas activities.

We hope that all our families have a very safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We thank you for the wonderful year we have had and for all the support you have shown along the way.

Thank you and Merry Christmas!Miss Dodds, Mrs Hand, Mrs Bell & Mr Hallett
