Our Grade 6 Awards:

These Awards were presented at Graduation - here are the speeches:

2023 Mathematics Award: Ethan Nyugen

"Ethan demonstrates excellence in all four proficiences of Mathematics. He has built a robust knowledge of maths concepts and has mastered an understanding of the 'why' and 'how' of mathematics. Ethan displays fluency when calcualting answers. He has an innate abiltiy to think outside the box when problem solving. Ethan has also received excellent results in mathematics this year. His progression through the mathematics curriculum has been outstanding. Our classroooms have benefitted from having Ethan engage in rich numeracy discussions during his time at WMPS which we will surely miss."

2023 English Award: Estelle Joseph

"At Waverley Meadows, students learn about writing skills, reading comprehension strategies and speaking and listening techniques that will equip them for the future. During her time at Waverley Meadows Estelle has mastered an ability to analyse, understand, communicate and build relationships with others. She has such a beautiful way with words illustrated with her being awarded the Waverley Meadows Primary School poetry writing competition winner for 2023. She has developed the knowledge and skills needed for education, training and the workplace in the future. Estelle is an ethical, thoughtful, informed and active member of our classroom and her peers benefit from just being in the class with her. In addition, Estelle’s commitment to learning and outstanding leadership is an exemplar that future school leaders should strive to emulate.

Once again congratulations Estelle, you are a most worthy recipient of this award."

2023 Arts Award: Cora Mathys

"At Waverley Meadows, our Arts program covers visual art, music and drama. In Visual Art Cora takes pride when presenting her artwork which showcases her imagination and creativity. Her pieces of work are carefully constructed and produced.  Keep creating Cora, its good for the soul!

We all witnessed Cora's fabulous performance this year as Captain Cod in our production of The Pirates of the Currybean. Thank you Cora, for your unending enthusiasm you brought to our show, your diligence in learning lines, persevering when feeling unwell, your help with props and keeping us all organised! Keep singing and enjoying the performing arts at High School. "

2023 Science Award: Charan Sivakumar

"From the time Charan joined us at WMPS his keen interest in science and his inquisitive, inquiring mind became evident along with his willingness to share his thoughts and findings with everyone, individually or as a team member. He completed a variety of different projects including Land Pollution, Wicking beds, Vegetables and herbs to grow in our kitchen garden which were all very well researched and detailed and presented in a variety of ways. Charan also used the question, prediction, research, procedure, data analysis and reflection process when investigating magnets with very interesting results.

Our Science lessons benefitted greatly from his input, commitment to a task and the quality of the resulting presentations. He is a quiet achiever who is always willing to help others. A budding scientist in the making."

Waverley Rotary Sportsmanship Award 2023: Kosta Papageorgiou

"Kosta has been chosen as the deserving recipient of this award from Waverley Meadows Primary School as his sporting attitude rather than ability is exemplary (even though he is often the most skilful player, particularly in soccer). He displays a genuine spirit of fair play, is inclusive, and he leads by example with sportsmanship. Out in the playground or on the soccer pitch during recess or lunch he genuinely plays for fun. Although he is often the most skilful player, he is also the most inclusive and fair. Yes, he is very humble in victory and gracious in defeat, but I would also say these are two personality traits he carries all through his schooling, not just in sport.

Kosta received this award at a ceremony a couple of weeks ago but we wanted to acknowledge this great achievement tonight at out graduation ceremony. Once again congratulations Kosta."

Community Spirit and Leadership Award 2023: Emma Blackman-Foster

"Each year Dr Carina Garland MP, the Federal Member for Chisholm, holds these awards to recognise the contributions of students in the Chisholm electorate to their school and the wider community.

Our school gets to nominate a student for this award each year and the obvious choice was Emma. She is involved with community groups outside of school (Scouts) and her commitment to fundraising through the SRC has been amazing. Every lunchtime during term 1 and 4 she has single-handedly overseen the selling of the Zooper Doopers. This significant contribution has made our year 6 legacy project become a reality for future students to enjoy.

Emma received this award at a ceremony on Tuesday but we wanted to acknowledge this great achievement tonight at our graduation ceremony. Once again congratulations Emma."

KILOMETRE CLUB

Kilometre Club began in Term 4 this year - students are encouraged to join us on the oval for the last 15 minutes of lunchtime to run laps of the 500 m course.

I am proud to say that almost every student has participated - students are welcome to run or walk the course daily.

This term we have clocked up 2670 kilometres!! That is from WMPS to Cardwell which it the closest mainland point to Hinchinbrook Island in Queensland - a fantastic effort.

A few students even managed to clock up a 100 kilometre - with Archie Ternes receiving a 110 Km certificate - well done Archie!!

I wonder where we will get to next year???
