Primary Happenings

Year 1: Circus Incursion

Su-Ann Chung, Year 1 Team Leader

What an incredible circus incursion! It was a dazzling and entertaining day full of discovery for our Year 1 students, where they had the chance to develop new skills, build resilience and most importantly, have fun!

This experience was not just about learning circus tricks - it was about embracing our growth mindset, facing challenges with perseverance, and discovering the joy of trying something new.

Colourful juggling scarves thrown into the air, boi balls swinging around, stripey hula hoops swishing on arms and bellies, long flower sticks carefully rolling up and down arms, and plates being balanced on long sticks were opportunities for our students to practice patience and resilience.

They learned that mistakes weren’t failures but steps toward growth, reinforcing the importance of perseverance. Whether dropping a plate or missing a catch, each misstep became a learning opportunity. Encouraged to keep trying, they were reminded that growth often comes from overcoming challenges.

In addition to skill development, the circus incursion also encouraged our Christian values of patience, perseverance and joy. Much like our faith journey, it reminded them that challenges can be opportunities for growth. Through fun and play, they built essential life skills while growing in character and confidence.

Year 2: Camp Day

Anna Starchenko, Year 2 Team Leader

Our Year 2 Camp Day experience at Mt Evelyn Discovery Camp was a memorable day filled with outdoor adventures, physical challenges and practical life applications. The day started early, but anticipation was high as we boarded the buses. We took part in a variety of activities that included team-building games, learning new skills, and identifying important elements in the bush. Each activity was designed to help us work together and find solutions as a group.

It was a privilege to be together in the outdoors, where we were able to apply our essential understandings from the Term 1 Inquiry Unit ‘Healthy Me, You, Us’. This experience allowed us to make decisions about staying safe and inclusive, being resilient, and recognising God’s creation in nature and the importance of caring for the environment. Students also had many opportunities to demonstrate leadership skills, whether it was encouraging others or taking initiative in small group challenges, which are essential skills for future success.

Overall, the Year 2 Camp Day was an unforgettable experience that helped students grow as individuals and as a cohort. They made lasting memories, and our prayer is that they look forward with confidence and eager expectation to future camp events as they continue to grow and develop into healthy, compassionate and courageous young people.

Term 1 Sports Summary

Ingrid Briggs, Primary Sport Coordinator

It has been a busy start to the year in Primary Sport with many of our senior primary students representing our college in a variety of offsite events.

On Thursday 27th February, thirteen of our talented primary school swimmers competed in the District Swimming Carnival at Tintern Grammar School against 9 other local schools. It was wonderful to see these students increase in confidence as the event progressed, and they all represented DCC's spirit beautifully - encouraging and supporting each other through each of the events!

Many of our students received ribbons for their heat swims, and we congratulate Casey Lau (Year 6) for qualifying for the Division Swimming Carnival in the 50m Backstroke and coming 4th in a competitive field.

During Friday sport, Year Five students jumped, flipped and climbed their way through some exciting sessions at BTYC Gymnastics, learning new skills and exploring different movements.

Our Year Six students have now completed both their Summer Interschool Sport Gala Days on two extremely hot Tuesdays in March! This event involves almost 2000 students from other schools in the District competing to secure the coveted District Pennant. Congratulations to the following teams for their podium finish:

  • 2nd in District: Boys Softcross (MVP: Maxim Marrone)
  • 3rd in District:  Boys Tee-ball (MVP: Jesse Sharma)
  • 3rd in District: Girls Softcross (MVP: Lucy Ambrose)

We now look ahead with anticipation towards the Senior Primary Athletics at Doncaster on Thursday 20th March, and our Junior Athletics at DCC on Monday 31st March.

(Information regarding these events and volunteering can be found on Schoolbox.)
