Connect: Year 6

Important Dates

Literacy

We are continuing our novel study on Warhorse and the students are understanding the First World War through the eyes of Joey, the Warhorse.  The War is entering its second winter and the students are empathising with the German soldiers and the difficulties that they faced.  The writing component connected to the novel now moves to Persuasive Text.  Please ask your children about the book and get them to tell you as much as they can as this recalling of information is vital for their comprehension.

Numeracy

We have brought our Order of Operations unit to a close in Number, as well as our Data Representation unit in the applied section of Mathematics and the students have progressed incredibly well.  We now move into the dreaded unit of......Fractions!  No doubt that this is often challenging for students to get a grasp of, but I'm sure that if they show the same dedication and willingness to learn that they have up to date, they will gain a greater undertanding of this difficult concept.  In the applied area of the subject, we are looking at... Area!  The students that we have taught in the past have enjoyed this concept because they can see how handy it is to have this understanding in everyday life.

Inquiry

With our Inquiry, we move into the effects that the media can have on us. The media that we all are exposed to of a daily basis is all encompassing and it's improant that we have the skills to think about what is truth and what is not.  It also can have a profound effect on how we feel and whether we should aspire to fit into a certain category, or whether this category is unrealistic and we should be happy with our true identity.

We will also look closely at gender sterotyping and the effect that it can have on us as we move into the adolesent phase.  The media and society in general can have influences on what we wear, what sports we play and even on what subjects and careers we choose.

Well-Being

The students have settled into the school year really well on the whole and we have been reinforcing the four 'Rs' that we pride ourselves on here at Skye Primary- Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationships.  We do a morning circle every morning and we discuss what we have been doing well and what to expect throughout the coming days.  We talk about our expectations as a group and what we can do throughout the day to be the best students and class members that we can be.  This is adopted from the Berry Street Education Model.  It helps our students foster a sense of belonging and for them to think about their learning and what they can do themselves to be the best that they can be.  This matches nicely with our Respectful Relationships topics of identifying what emotions we, and others have to deal with on a daily basis.  It's so important for our mental health to have a positive mindset and have strategies on how to successfully deal with the challenges of life.

Until next time, all the best from Mrs. Grant, Mr. Taberner and Mr. Keenan
