Auslan

Over the past two weeks, students have been actively engaged in Auslan learning. Our Prep to year Two students explored the key theme of ‘family’, building their vocabulary and understanding of related signs. Year 3 to 6 students further developed their skills by focusing on ‘family’ in conjunction with prepositions, enriching their sentence structure and comprehension.
As part of our ongoing commitment to improving receptive skills, finger-spelling continues to be a vital component of our warm-up routine. We encourage families to reinforce these skills at home, even for short periods. Incorporating finger-spelling into daily routines, such as during dinner or while reading, can significantly contribute to student progress.
We are delighted to observe a marked increase in students’ confidence with finger-spelling, a testament to their dedication and the support provided both in the classroom and at home.
For those interested in gaining insight into how the Deaf community accesses and engages with cultural events, I recommend exploring the ‘Deaf Connect’ website. This platform serves as a central hub for Deaf individuals seeking shows, performances, and events that offer Auslan interpretation.
By observing the breadth and scope of events listed, and the way the site is utilised, we can gain a broader understanding of the Deaf community’s needs and preferences regarding accessibility. This ‘bird’s-eye’ view’ provides valuable context for our own efforts in promoting inclusivity and effective communication. Below are some examples of events from this website: deafconnect.org.au
