What a wonderful day it was in the bright warm sun! On Tuesday 25th of Feb, the 12 Geography class made their way down to Burwood Brickworks to investigate land use change, which relates to their Unit 3 studies. It’s interesting to discover how much change has taken place, with the site formerly being an industrial clay quarry, and now serving as a mixed use residential, recreational and commercial area. Highlights of the day included a behind the scenes special access of the waste management facility, the incredible expertise of the two guest expert speakers, and the positive vibes and energy of all the students. Its sad that this is the last official secondary school fieldwork for the kids, but they are in a better position now for their upcoming fieldwork SAC. Maybe we can undertake ONE MORE fieldwork to explore the melting glaciers and ice sheets of Greenland… (please!!!)
Its great as well hearing our students reflect on the experiences, as Geography is full of reflective and critical thinking. Sophie had a very nice recount of the day below:
On Tuesday the 25th of February the year 12 geography class went to Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre to investigate land use change. We walked around the Brickworks, observing townhouses and apartments, we visited the rooftop garden, and explored the shops, during this we conducted a survey, a land use inventory, and two sketches. Through which we learned about the social, environmental, and economic impacts of land use change, and the geographic characteristics that influence it.
This excursion was a great final fieldwork and utilised many of the skills we learned in previous years while focusing on a new but exciting topic.

Also, a very big thank you to Amira Muhtaseb for helping supervise the excursion, and thank you to Simone from Cultivating Communities and Kate from Frasers who were excellent and informative guest speakers. Until next time – stay well!
