Vermont Secondary College
Last week the much-awaited gymnasium was handed to the college by the building firm 2Construct. The complex contains dual competition standard basketball courts with retractable seating for 950 patrons, a weights room, changerooms, two classrooms, an office for our Physical Education staff, kitchenette, extensive storage facilities plus a large entrance foyer. The building was funded via the State Government and college funds. The complex will be a significant asset for the school and local community for many years to come.
A huge debt is owed to Mr Mike Stevens, Assistant Principal overseeing Buildings & Grounds, for the countless hours and sleepless nights he has put into getting this major project to completion. It is a huge accomplishment and one we are all proud of, well done Mike. Thanks also goes to our building firm 2Consrtuct, our architects Kneeler Design, Project Managers Case Meallin, and to our local member John Mullahy MP for all his and the State Governments support in getting this project to completion.
There will be an official opening in Term Two for school community members to attend.
On Friday 28th February, in our first Senior and Junior college assembly for the year, and the first ever assemblies held in our new gymnasium, we had the great pleasure of celebrating and acknowledging the outstanding performance of students from the VCE class of 2024. It was a wonderful opportunity to present these exceptional students to the college community.
To begin, from our first VCE Vocational Major graduating cohort, we recognize the achievements of Jusal Nand. Jusal completed a VET Building & Construction Carpentry course, multiple work placements and created an illuminated desk using his new carpentry skills. Congratulations Jusal, on being the recipient of Vermont’s first VCE Vocational Major High-Achiever’s Award and we are proud of your achievements.

At the Senior Assembly Amelia Ross and Akhila Gollamudi were awarded the Deakin Shield for their significant contribution to the college in their key leadership role as the two School Captains. The Deakin Shield is presented each year by the Hon Michael Sukkar MP Federal Member for Deakin. I would like to thank Michael for attending our Senior presentation assembly and for his ongoing support of the Deakin Shield and the broader college.
Also announced at the assembly were the 2025 School Captains. Congratulations goes to the 2025 School Captains Caitlin Siebel of Hotham and Areeba Shakir of Stirling.
Well done to all award winners and we wish you and all 2024 VCE students every success in the future.
The annual VSC Athletics carnival will be held on Friday 7th March at the East Burwood Athletics Track. This is always a fantastic day where the whole school has the opportunity to come together and compete and be with friends in a supportive and friendly atmosphere. It is one of the key events on the school calendar.
All students in Years 7 to 12 are expected to attend this whole school event. There are no classes running at school and there is no ‘sign out’ option for senior students. All students are expected to attend for the entire day.
It would also be great to see all students compete in at least two events and do not forget to wear your house colours. Parents and guardians are invited to attend on the day to support their children. If you have any questions about the day then please contact one of our Sports Leader, Amy Malander or Sport Assistant, Sean Gillespie.
