Managing challenging student behaviours

A growing concern expressed by several of our members relates to the management of students with challenging behaviours with limited access to required supports and services.
Managing challenging behaviours can be complex, as they often stem from a variety of underlying factors such as trauma, mental health issues, neurodivergence, or difficult home environments. Teachers and school leaders are tasked with balancing the need for maintaining classroom order with the responsibility of addressing individual student needs in a fair and supportive manner. However, without the right tools, professional development and supports, school staff are having difficulty in implementing evidence-based strategies that de-escalate situations and promote positive behaviour.
In recognition of these challenges, the Department highlighted a range of training opportunities and resources in last month’s School Update which aim to assist schools in developing effective behaviour management strategies.
Ongoing access to training, expert guidance, and structured interventions is critical to helping schools navigate these challenges effectively. Schools that receive adequate support are better positioned to reduce disruptions, enhance student well-being, and create a more stable and inclusive learning environment for both students and staff.
