First Few Weeks of School
Student Reflection by Sarabeth C (7.4)
It’s only been 6 weeks since the start of the school year, but so many things have happened between now and then.
On our first day of school, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and teachers of Oxley. We were quickly assigned to our Home Groups and guided to our classrooms for the year. As everyone gathered their belongings and sat in their seats, our teachers briefed us about the basic preparations for each day at school, handing out our student diaries to write down important dates for the term. The rest of the day involved fun activities such as interesting icebreakers and an enjoyable orienteering experience around the school.
For the rest of the week, I was immersed in various new subjects and the warm atmosphere of friends and classmates. New subjects were introduced to us, along with our friendly teachers. My first double session of Science was thrilling, as I acquired laboratory skills while we conducted intriguing experiments with fascinating results. Additionally, we commenced the Instrumental Program. The students new to Oxley could choose from the different musical instruments.
The next few weeks went by in a flash, filled to the brim with more new subjects, Sport trials and introductions to new experiences in Middle School. Still, the most noteworthy, events were the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. Everyone was excitedly bubbling, looking forward to representing their Houses in various events. As the days approached, we found ourselves dashing across the pool in freestyle and sprinting our hardest in the last quarter of the 800 metres. All Houses gave their personal best, earning well-deserved points and ribbons. Whether we were participating in multiple events or cheering everyone on in the stands, we constantly displayed a sense of sportsmanship.
So far, we’ve been able to adjust to the changes in Year 7 with the support and guidance of all the teachers here at Oxley. As the Year 7 Camp approaches in March, I have no doubt that it’ll be an unforgettable experience for all of us!
In Deuteronomy 31:6, God says,
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave or forsake you.
We continue to trust God’s promise as we embark in a new season of learning and growth.
Year 7 Parent BBQ
It has been a wonderful season as we welcome new families into the Oxley community. On Friday 28 February, we hosted a Parent BBQ for all our Year 7 families. This event provided a fantastic opportunity for parents to meet and mingle with other Year 7 parents in a casual setting over food and drinks.
Approximately 65 families attended the event, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the inclusiveness and supportive nature of both students and staff. The great weather made it a blessed occasion, allowing parents to connect and share similar experiences as their children began their secondary school journey. We had a wonderful group of Year 8 parents who volunteered to help cook, serve, and host the event. We are deeply grateful for their time, willingness to serve, and support in fostering community growth.
Special thanks go to Mr Trevor Whittle and his team of Senior leaders for organising and running games for the Year 7 students. The students had an excellent time competing in various station games with their peers and getting to know the student leaders, forming new friendships in the process. We also want to thank College Captain, Chloe D for capturing some splendid moments of the event.
Mr James Avram, Mr David Cutler, and Pastor Matt assisted with cooking the delicious food and serving it to parents and students. It was truly a blessing to see our Godly community come together to support one another and serve with humble hearts. The smiles, laughter, jovial conversations, and heartfelt gratitude were a true testament to the event's success.
As the Lord reminds us in His word,
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Let us continue to strive to build a community that encourages each other and supports everyone’s growth in God’s ways.
