Grade 5 and 6

Term One Wrap Up! 🎉
Term 1 has been an exciting and action-packed start to the year, filled with engaging events and plenty of learning! Our students have worked hard to settle into their new classes, build relationships with their teachers, and, for our Grade 5s, adjust to a brand-new learning space. Throughout the term, we explored our Big Idea of Connection, with students brainstorming and proposing new laws to support the 5/6 Community. This culminated in a hands-on Parliament Experience and a mock referendum, bringing their learning to life.
Other major moments included our Grade 5s successfully completing NAPLAN, while the Grade 6s ventured into the city for Young Leaders Day, gaining valuable insights and inspiration. To top it off, all students showcased their teamwork and sportsmanship during the Interschool Sport Gala Days.
It’s been a busy term, but without a doubt, a fantastic and rewarding one!
LEARNING
Literacy
This term, our Grade 5 and 6 students have explored a range of mentor texts to strengthen their comprehension strategies and apply these skills in their own writing.
Grade 5 students delved into War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, uncovering powerful themes of friendship and resilience while expanding their vocabulary through close reading and discussion.
Meanwhile, Grade 6 students explored The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett, honing their skills in summarising, analysing, and synthesising. Inspired by their reading, they crafted their own fables, using figurative language to bring their stories to life and captivate their audience.
Numeracy
Throughout Term 1, our Grade 5 students have been busy preparing for NAPLAN by exploring a range of mathematical concepts. They strengthened their understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, and multiplication while developing key problem-solving strategies. Students also explored factors and number properties, honing their ability to identify essential information within worded problems.
This term, Grade 6 students have deepened their mathematical thinking by exploring number properties, multiplicative reasoning, and divisibility rules. They also tackled place value and decimals, applying their skills to challenging, open-ended problems that encouraged critical thinking and identifying key information.
CBL
This term, our Big Idea of Connections has been woven into our learning, focusing on government, citizenship, and how communities work together to create legislative change. Students explored the democratic process firsthand by proposing new legislative bills to our very own "government" (the 5/6 teachers) and participating in a mock referendum.
Collaboration was at the heart of this learning experience, as students worked in groups with peers from other classes, strengthening their teamwork and communication skills. It has been a fantastic opportunity for students to engage in real-world problem-solving while deepening their understanding of democracy and civic responsibility.
EVENTS
Interschool Sport
Term 1 brought an exciting opportunity for students to participate in not one, but two Interschool Sport Gala Days! Our teams showcased their skills and teamwork across a variety of sports, including HotShots Tennis, Tee-Ball, Sofcrosse, Cricket, Basketball, and Volleybounce.
We are incredibly proud of the students’ effort, dedication, and sportsmanship as they worked together in newly formed teams, representing Wonga Park with pride. It was a fantastic experience, filled with teamwork, determination, and plenty of fun!
Primary Dream and Lead Conference
In Week 8, our Grade 6 cohort adventured into the city to be part of Young Leaders Day! Our students loved hearing about the strategies for showing empathy and connecting with others from presenters which included Nick Pearce (CEO of Homie), Wil Massara (Founder of Dream and Lead) and Lucy Thomas (Founder of Project Rockit) and were inspired to be leaders themselves as they move forward into their final year of primary school.
Cross Country
Students laced up their runners and put their endurance to the test at this year’s Cross Country Day! With determination and enthusiasm, they tackled the course, pushing themselves to achieve their personal best. The cheers of encouragement echoed across the Wonga Park Reserve as students supported their peers every step of the way.
A massive highlight for our Grade 6 students was the Buddy Race! What a brilliant moment for them to run with their Prep buddies and enjoy the challenge of completing the Cross Country course together.
Congratulations to everyone who participated, whether they were running for a top spot or simply challenging themselves to finish the race. A huge congratulations to all our runners for their effort, resilience, and fantastic sportsmanship!
Colour Run
Another huge highlight, Colour Run was once again a great success as students were covered head to toe in colour and drenched by our wonderful Wonga Park fire brigade. Thank you to everyone that got invovled, helped raise money and made the experience what it was!
It's been a huge Term One in Grade 5/6! We hope everyone has a sensational break over the holidays and we can't wait to come back ready for an amazing Term Two!
