PREP NEWS

Dear Prep Families,

We have had another exciting week in Prep, full of learning and growth. Here’s what we have been working on:

Literacy

This week, we learnt the sounds /d/ for Daisy the Dog and /g/ for Gabby the Goat. Students practised identifying these sounds in words, blending them together, and using them in their reading and writing.

We continued working on nouns and verbs, with a focus on writing sentences that make sense. To support comprehension, students have been practising reading their sentences carefully and drawing a matching picture to ensure they understand what they have written.

In reading, we have been building confidence with Little Learners Love Literacy decodable books. Students have been practising their blending skills, which means smoothly joining sounds together to read words fluently. We have also been focusing on tracking words with our finger, using expression when reading aloud, and self-correcting when something doesn’t sound right.

Maths

We have begun comparing numbers, using language such as more than, less than, larger than, and smaller than to describe different amounts.

Students have been using their counting skills to accurately count and compare numbers. We have practised identifying which number is larger or smaller and explaining our thinking using full sentences. These early number comparison skills lay the foundation for future addition and subtraction concepts.

Ramadan Talk with Taahirah

This week, we were fortunate to have Taahirah, Jehaan’s mum, visit our classroom to educate us about Ramadan. We are very grateful for her time and generosity in sharing this important cultural and religious tradition with us.

Some new knowledge we learnt:

  • Children begin fasting from around age 13.

  • Ramadan is a time for giving to charity and practising kindness.

  • The holy month ends with a big celebration called Eid al-Fitr.

Taahirah also gifted each student a colouring set that highlights key facts about Ramadan, which was a lovely way to reinforce our learning. We greatly appreciate her time and effort in helping us understand and celebrate this special occasion.

Ramadan Mubarak to all who are observing!

Homework

This week, students have brought home a Little Learners Love Literacy decodable book as part of their homework reading. A letter with tips for reading decodable readers at home was also included in their homework handout.

A friendly reminder that each student’s Mathletics and Reading Eggs login details are glued into the back of their homework book. These online programs are a great way to reinforce learning at home.

Reminders

  • Assembly is this Friday from 9:00–9:30 am.
  • Please check your child’s bag for their homework book.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great week!
