Clean Up Australia Day

Well done to all the students and staff at DPW who cleaned up our school yard last Friday for 'Clean Up Australia Day'. A thank you to the Year 3 and 5 students and staff who walked over to Bon Thomas Reserve and cleaned up that area, making it free of mess for our community to enjoy.

Remember to always place your rubbish into a rubbish bin to keep Australia beautiful and clean everyday.

High Ability Program

The Victorian High-Ability program provides high-ability students in Years 5 to 8 at government schools the opportunity to participate in 10-week online extension and enrichment programs, in English and Mathematics.

During this term we have 4 Year 5 & 6 students who are participating in the High Ability Program run by Virtual School Victoria. These students have attended weekly classes so far and have been active learners and participants in their classes.

Jena and Azra are part of the English classes where they are honing their writing skills and ability to develop characters throughout their writing.  This week’s lesson focused on developing the ‘hero’ character in and story and the formula for a heroes journey that most narrative texts follow.

Caspar and Leo are part of the Math classes where their problem solving abilities have been challenged by making and testing conjectures and understanding the divisibility rules of numbers.

In this week’s lesson, Caspar and Leo investigated the various number systems that have been used over time.  This included making numbers using Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Binary code.

These students have been attending these classes via WEBEX during school time, and have the opportunity to complete additional tasks via class blogs and forums as part of the Virtual Schools Victoria portal.

Victoria Container Deposit Scheme

This year, the students and staff have begun collecting the containers for the Victoria Container Deposit Scheme.

Every eligible drink container returned contributes to our circular economy. By participating, Victorians are:

  • Creating clean streams of recycling
  • Reducing litter
  • Earning change for themselves, their communities, school and charities

Families are also encouraged to bring in their containers that can be returned, if they are not already collecting them at home.

So far, the school has collected over 300 containers in only a few weeks! The money raised from this will be spent on sustainable practices around the school such as vegetables for the garden or containers to be Waste Free each Wednesday.

Thank you for making a difference for our precious planet.
