Ambassador Day - Whittlesea Tech

Our 3 Student Ambassadors, Matilda, Anna and Jay had there last project working day this month at Whittlesea Tech School.

Student Ambassadors meet on a regular basis to participate in STEM-based activities and projects. They work with the Tech School Staff, Community and Industry Partners to build student agency at the Tech School and develop technical and enterprise skills necessary for success as leaders in the future workforce.

Through working in teams with students from other schools on these projects, Student Ambassadors have: Engaged with a variety of technologies on-site at the Tech School, developed communication and collaboration skills through participation in STEM projects, developed leadership capabilities, practiced teamwork, communication, facilitation, collaboration, creativity, peer-to-peer education, networked with students from other school and industry and community partners to develop and create their end products. The photos capture the fabulous work completed by our very talented students at Plenty River College. We look forward to celebrating our students' achievements at the upcoming Exhibition and Presentation Night at the Whittlesea Tech School.

Riverside Community Centre - 'Love Where You Live' Project

On the 9th of October we were proud to present our finished mural for the 'Love Where You Live' project at the Riverside Community Centre. The culmination of two months of hard work, our students worked in teams to install the artwork on the wall. Everyone was proud of how it turned out! Jay spoke on behalf of the class at the launch, impressing everyone with his public speaking skills.

Reclink

Every Thursday afternoon, our students embark on an exciting journey at Reclink, where they engage in a diverse range of activities that foster personal growth and development.

From ten-pin bowling to tennis, basketball, badminton, and soccer, our students have explored various sports, all while gaining valuable life skills.

Participating in these activities has allowed our students to hone their communication skills, as effective teamwork often hinges on clear and efficient interaction. Learning to work together, and support each other, our students have undoubtedly improved their teamwork skills.

Moreover, these activities have provided a fantastic platform for our students to build confidence. As they tackle new challenges and celebrate small victories, their self-assurance continues to grow, influencing their approach to various aspects of life.

We are immensely proud of the enthusiasm and commitment our students have shown at Reclink. These experiences not only make Thursday afternoons thrilling but also contribute significantly to their personal development.

Real Industry Job Interview (RIJI) Event

For the second time as PRC and, in as many times previously as a part of DVLC, we were delighted to have taken part in this year’s RIJI program. Held on 12th October and 19th October for Nillumbik and Banyule schools respectively, RIJI is a career development program designed to afford secondary school students the opportunity to prepare for the world of work and other challenges.

The program’s trilogy for work readiness rests firmly on an elaborate preparation aimed at assisting students to develop good job search, resume writing and interviewing skills.

The program is usually delivered in Term 3, as part of a school's curriculum, through a series of guided lesson plans. And its highlights consist of a face-to-face interview with a local volunteer employer during a RIJI event.

It should be mentioned that a program of this nature has thrived, over the years, because of the active involvement of a range of stakeholders. Clearly visible are the participating schools, students and to some extent, local employers, and other organisations. But behind the scenes are other entities such as the Victoria State government, Latrobe University and Melbourne Polytechnic. Local councils, including the Yarra, Darebin Merri-bek, Inner Northern, Whittlesea, and Banyule/Nillumbik have been the main facilitators of the program through deployment of resources and manpower. Equally deserving of acknowledgement are the authorities at Bendigo Bank and Community Bank of Clifton Hill/North Fitzroy for their generosity.

The 2023 RIJI event attracted a significant number of participating students and schools in Melbourne. This is consistent with its popularity over the years. PRC is particularly proud of the 17 students who participated in the event and have commented positively about the skills and experience gained and lesson learnt during their interactions. We eagerly await written feedback for each student from the interviewers. These are valuable pieces of evidence of where the students are today in terms of job readiness and what additional steps, if any, they would be required to undertake to improve and be fully read.

A big thank you to the entire team here at PRC for their dedication and attention to all that were required to make the event a success for the College and our students.
