Literacy – Reading and Writing

Over the past week we have continued with our persuasive writing. Students have enjoyed writing a range of different texts to persuade their readers. In 1CR we enjoyed writing a class booklet that was inspired by one of the student’s favourite picture books ‘Do Not Open This Book’. Students have begun to develop strong arguments to persuade their readers in their writing, well done Grade 1’s!

In Reading students have enjoyed learning how to critique texts. This is a skill where students are able to discuss and develop their own opinions on the books they read. They can identify things they like or dislike about the book as well as begin to develop questions about the text. This week we have begun to look at Information Reports.

This week in both Reading and Writing students have been looking at non-fiction books and are beginning to find relevant facts on insects. If you would like to support your child at home, you could look at a range of books, websites and podcasts where students can draw out facts and information about animals and other things that may be of interest to them.

Maths

In Maths we have enjoyed a week of fun hands-on games that have focused on addition and subtraction. Students have been engaged and eager to participate in these games. Ask them to teach you how to play Black Hole and Roco, all you need is a deck of playing cards or paper! We have revisited our strategies to help us solve addition problems such as repeated addition, skip counting and place value.

Inquiry

We have begun exploring and learning about our new Inquiry unit this term. Students have enjoyed learning about some new key words such as impulsivity, preserve and memory. Students have been discussing and sharing places and memories that are important to their families.
