FOUNDATION TRANSITION

We had our first 2024 Foundation transition session on Friday. It was wonderful to see all our new Foundation for next school year and welcome all the parents into Milgate. The students were involved in a range of activities and we look forward to seeing them each Friday afternoon for the next 3 weeks.

YEAR 3 EXCURSION - THE SHRINE/ MUSEUM

As part of our inquiry into 'Where We Are In Place And Time', the Year 3 cohort went on an excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance and the Melbourne Museum.

Students were taken on a tour through the Shrine where they learned about the Shrine’s historical significance and its importance to many people as a place of remembrance. Students took particular interest in learning about the eternal flame and the poppy garden to honour and remember our brave soldiers.

We then made our way to the Melbourne Museum where students inquired into the First Peoples Gallery. Students explored the artefacts of the First Peoples and learned more about the people, traditions and culture.

This excursion was a fantastic learning experience for all students as a provocation into our new unit of inquiry. Students have formed some great wonderings which we will explore in class to learn more about Australian history.

YEAR 5 & 6 PERFORMING ARTS INCURSION

On the 2nd of November, 21 Year 5 and 6 students were selected to attend Soul Sonics performing arts incursion. We learned about loops in music and how to create our own funky beats from sounds we recorded around us. Using these sounds we crafted our own loops in small groups, learning how to adjust volume and pitch. Lead by Jason from Soul Sonics, we used a range of technology to create our loops and songs.

A big thank you to Jason from Soul Sonics for coming out to teach us.

WHOLE SCHOOL WELLBEING DAY

Today all students participated in our Whole School Wellbeing Day which focused on connection. We started our day with a whole school assembly on the basketball court, where we were lucky enough to watch Miss Mancarella, Mr Mander and Miss Williams be dunked by our top fundraisers.

Students then moved to their Milgate Mix-up groups where they participated in different activities to build connections with other students and staff. Some of the activities included ‘Crack a Smile’ where students had to do what they could to make their partner smile. ‘Alphabet Scavenger Hunt’ which involved students working together to find as many different objects around the school starting with each letter of the alphabet. Students designed a collaborative quilt piece, which will be put together and displayed around the school. They had could design a bandana for our amazing Bentley and Magnolia, and create a story together by each saying one word. Below is the hilarious story from Miss Calleja’s group.

The Farmer's Crazy Farm written by Miss Calleja’s Milgate Mix-up Group

The cow lived on the big farm with the cow's mother, a baby goose with a blue pig and a farmer's dog. There was a monster umbrella raining on the farm on horse food with pigs and sheep. The farm had a rainy monster with poo and plants and chocolate and a dog growing a cat with long sharp legs but the hippopotamus ate the pizza and a dog with an elephant's toothpaste. Planets with cows and a unicorn, that pooped Pokemon came to win octopuses eating giraffes and sloths fighting an elephant's trunk in slow motion.

Students enjoyed a whole school picnic on the top oval. After lunch, students returned to their own class and participated in wellbeing activities. It was a great day had by staff and students - there were so many smiles and laughs had by all.

ALIA'S ACHIEVEMENT AT THE ARABIC READING COMPETITION

Hi, my name is Alia Mourad from 5RC and I competed in the Arabic Reading Competition. To compete, I read and summarised 25 books. I then participated in a meeting where they asked me about the books that I read. After this meeting, I placed in the top 10 and went to another meeting, where they asked us more comprehension questions about the books. After this, I placed 3rd place in Australia! The other winners were in Years 8 and 9. Placing third meant I won a trip to Dubai to compete in the international finals.

On the first day in Dubai, we went to MotionGate, which is like Disneyland and we spent the whole day there. On the second day, we went to the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library which has 7 stories and is shaped like a book. On the third and final day, they had a ceremony to see who the winner was and it was a tie between the United Arab Emirates and Morocco!

During this experience, I learnt to never give up and to always give things a go.
