Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program

The Long Walk – Ganbu Gulin

We have had a busy Term 3 and start to Term 4 in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program.

The Long Walk – Ganbu Gulin

The Long Walk is a charity inspired by Michael Long’s walk to Canberra to increase awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Ganbu Gulin (One Mob in Woi Wurrung language) is a branch of the Long Walk Foundation that brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to support them to find a voice, build pride and connection to culture and community. During this program students participated in a contemporary version of traditional cooking with salt bush kangaroo burgers with damper, hip hop dancing and art. The hip hop dancing included students from Ms Hudson’s drama class and all dance students. It was a fun session that allowed all students to get active and show off their dance moves. The art session welcomed Peter Hood and Nikayla Bamblett to run a session teaching our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students about traditional artwork and had them create individual pieces telling their story. Students also created a collaborative piece which has been hung on the wall in our front office.

Recognition Pathway

We were lucky to once again welcome back ex Reservoir High student Peter Hood to help guide students in designing tiles for the Recognition Pathway. Peter helped students to create designs that paid homage to their Country and culture. Students first designed multiple tiles and then either imprinted or scratched their designs into the clay. These tiles will be the final pieces in the Recognition Pathway.
