Grade 4

Explore the Learning in Grade 4

Reading:

Reading this term has seen students engage with a wide variety of texts exploring the Sun, Earth, Moon, and outer space. This has included information reports, news articles, BTN reports and picture books such as ‘Dear Earth’ by Isabel Otter. Using these, we have explored different ways authors engage their readers, utilise language and text features, and vary mood and tone. Students have also reviewed and analysed their own books, as well as practiced a range of comprehension strategies to answer questions about their reading.

Writing:

In writing, students have completed creative narratives, persuasive pieces, and information reports linking our learning in inquiry and reading to their writing. We have also written letters to and from the Earth, experimenting with tone, and created scientific procedures involving our experiments. In addition, students have practiced using interesting language features such as simile and metaphor in poetry, and sharpened their use of description using the ‘show don’t tell’ method. To celebrate our writing this year, we are all looking forward to our book launch in week 11, where students will have their work professionally published.

Inquiry:

In inquiry, students have explored the Earth, Sun, Moon, and Space through a range of experiments and projects. They learnt about how the moon affects tides, and how the Earth’s rotation around the Sun affects the seasons. Students have also used magnets to test gravitational pull, created sun ovens to observe the power of the Sun, and made stop-motion videos demonstrating their knowledge of the Earth and Moon’s rotation. Students are currently working on an end-of-year project to display their term’s learning in an innovative and creative way that engages their audience!

Maths:

During maths lessons this term, grade 4 students have covered a wide variety of concepts. We have revised our knowledge of fractions and linked this with our learning on chance and probability. We have also completed a unity exploring the concept of time, where we created sundials, planned dream holidays, and created clocks using maths equipment in creative ways. To finish our term, students have revised our problem solving using the CUBES strategy and consolidated our knowledge of algorithms involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

The Year 4 team would love to that all of our wonderful parent volunteers that have assisted with the Year 4 learning program throughout the year.
